I hate the Mahomes thing that people forget; the coaching, the personnel around him, also the fact that he could sit for a year behind Alex smith. Yea he’s talented but is he Mahomes if he’s drafted by the bears?
Yes he was, the talent was always there and Reid did a great job of getting his talent level out of Mahomes. I had Mahomes over Watson and so did Corrosion. the decision by RS not to give up the extra 3rd for Mahomes was a franchise changer for both the Texans and Chiefs franchises.
Point is no one knew he was going to become the QB he did. Therefore, the are several QBs in this class that fit the same narrative, some better narrative, that surrounded Mahomes at draft time. Your look back after the fact you could say there are no QBs in this class like Tom Brady. It’s ridiculous
This will probably lead to another 5-10 years of mediocrity. BTW, the Texans have also been a horribly run franchise, unless mediocrity is your thing.
After Free agency, several areas of need aren't the same.My thinking now is these are our weakest areas. Please feel free to tell me where I'm wrong. I will use a scale of 1-5 with 1 being the division between the final cuts and the last roster spot. Futures signers get 0.5. 2 is a legimate backup or minimal starter. 3 is an average starter. 4 is an above average starter. 5 is elite (top 5). QB 2 WR 3 C 1 LG 3 RG 4 LT 5 RT 4 TE1 4 TE2 3 RB1 4 RB2 3 WR1 3 SR 2/3 (injury ?) Metchie ED1 3 ED2 2 DL1 3 DL2 3 DT1 2 DT2 2 CB1 4 CB2 3? ML ? LLB ? RLB ? S1 4 S2 4 This means the most glaring weakness is C, with QB second along with DL, DT, LB and S2.
That was my thought from reading commentary on the signing. Those coming off IR and those I cannot find are followed by ? like Meechie and Stingley. But I cannot evaluate these myself since I haven't seen them. I'd love to see the unedited evaluations of the coaching staff. What shortcomings do they believe can be coached up and which cannot.
He was picked 1-10. Should've been to the Texans. Just talking about talent, is there a QB in this draft with anywhere near Mahomes talent level?
Who knows? No one, no one, really knew the talent Mahomes possessed at the time of the draft. That’s the reason he wasn’t even the first QB taken and was passed over by 9 teams.
Depends. You talking about actual talent level in hindsight? Or the talent level ppl thought he had going into the draft?
Pretty accurate but I disagree with the DT #’s. Collins and Rankins should be 3. edit: if ward is S2 he should be a 4
Nice work. I would elevate QB simply on the basis that it is the most important position. Center is definitely 2nd as he is considered the QB of the Oline.
Do they still have Tackle Eligible plays? I was just looking at Broderick Jones Crazy speed for a tackle - has the skills developed from a basketball background to split out and play tight end I think there was some rule changes which might have eliminated tackle eligible plays since I last kept up with the rules. I could use help since the positions appear to be more specific than merely WR1 best, WR2 second best. They appear to be like OG and OT rather than OL. In which case they are probably mislabeled.
That’s fine, honestly you can go back and look at my posts. I wanted Mahomes over Watson as well. Was pretty pissed when KC jumped us, (a lot of my college buddies are from KC and I hated them getting good) but that still doesn’t mean everyone knew he was gonna be this good. Going 10th is not what he would go now if you redid the draft - hindsight.
The point still stands though. No one knew Tua was going to be concussion prone. Take away the concussions and Tua and Herbert are still better than Kyler. So as you said going into 2019 there were 2 QBs better than Kyler. There ended up being more. The smart move is to trade down a couple spots from 2. Pick up a first for next year, a 2nd for this year, plus more. You then draft the best defensive player at your trade down slot whether that be Tyree or Anderson. You grab the best weapon in this draft, Bijan. You pick up a Center. The top 4-5 are rated almost equally. This is not a great top end receiver class, but a pretty good one in the mid-rounds. This is the year you build the team. The top 100 are very good. Get as many picks there as you can. Next year you go in armed with 3 1st round picks. You will be able to get a QB that is better than any QB in this draft. I am not a Mills fan, but you give him Bijan, a Center, and another receiver. A much better offensive scheme and he will be much more than serviceable this year.
The 2023 QB class feels like a 2015 or 2016 QB class to me. Taking a bad QB at the top of the draft is truly awful. It's worse than taking no one at all -- because you end up committing your team to this player for years. It's devastating if the player doesn't become a truly above-average NFL QB. 2015 #1 overall: Jameis Winston #2 overall: Marcus Mariota 2016 #1 overall: Jared Goff #2 overall: Carson Wentz GO DEFENSE at #2
