Man, what a great movie. Great, constant but well-done nods to the games, little Easter Eggs everywhere, really funny, kids loved it, no complaints at all. Must-see if you're a Mario fan or have kids.
As a Chris Pratt fan I will get to this movie as soon as possible. I knew it would be great the moment they announced Chris Pratt as Mario.
My kids loved it. My wife and I enjoyed the throw backs. Will it win movie of the year? No. But maybe animated movie of the year.
Jack Black stole the show as Bowser. Terrific castings all around and Pratt/Joy did great as stewards. Luma was absolutely hilarious.
Saw this with the family, this movie was seriously fun! Lots of easter eggs all over, that's really why I enjoyed it. Recognized every single song from the games, even the Donkey Kong music when he began the Donkey Kong vs Mario fight Jack Black went full Tenacious D, and it was awesome! So many more things they can build on for future movies: Yoshi, Koopa kids and Bowser Jr, King Boo, Luigi's Mansion stuff, etc. The critics got this so wrong, good movie. 7.5/10

Jack Black is a f****ng national treasure I have zero desire to see this movie, but I'm glad it's awesome fun and yall like it
As for the movie, I thought it was enjoyable. Tons of Easter Eggs for oldschool players like me, I'm sure there were plenty more since I stopped playing Mario after 3. Voice cast was all fun but my favorite character the crazy blue Lumen. Thought it was a perfectly fine, Nintendo corporate approved, family film C+ for me. After all the money they made this weekend, I'm sure we'll see more of these soon especially since its hits that sweet spot of where parents and kids want to see it since the character has covered a few generations now....
A huge thing this movie did that I found incredibly refreshing is the same thing the critics pointed to during their negative reviews. It didn't really have much of a story. It stayed incredibly neutral and it just didn't seem to take itself super seriously which is insane to say is rare these days. Every movie and show wants to lecture me about social issues or suppression or global warming or blah blah blah. There's a big turtle and he wants to marry the princess and that's it. Amazing.
Nintendo doesn't want any "messy stuff" getting into their IP. All they want is $$$ from their good stories.
They tried avante garde with their first attempt. The filmmakers for the 90s movie were responsible for Max Headroom. That movie tanked hard. I think this time around they saw the success Sonic had and copied the vanilla as possible approach.
