Let's see...you got 2 guys playing forward, both in the 6'9" 230ish range. One is known as a face the basket, outside shooter , the other is known as a rebounder and take it to the hole scorer. Which one should be considered the SF and which one should be considered the PF?

Does it really matter if he plays SF or PF? It seems to me that positions are much more nebulous than they used to be when a point guard played the POINT and a center was in the middle.

I think of it this way, EG is a PF but with a SF body(right now) and Mo Taylor is a SF but with a PF body. That's why they complement each other well. EG rarely puts it on the floor, Mo likes to dribble it. EG loves to get into box out for rebounds, Mo doesn't rebound well.

Defensively crash5179 is right from what I have seen EG has problems guarding guys that drive in but has no problem guarding guys that post up and back down.

By the way, I don't see EG as Lanky like Shawn Marion, Darius Miles or Carlos Rogers, EG has a good frame, he's got big legs and calfs, and somewhat broad shoulders(not wide but just med.) he looks more like a shorter Duncan(body wise). His body doesn't look like the pictures of him in his HS or college days. His body does not look skinny(small legs, little shoulders, small waist, small wrist, small neck), he just looks medium but thin. If I compare him to TRock(if TRock is 6'9,222) then EG is bigger and thicker and looks 6'10-6'10 1/2, 230-235.

Placing all friendly/unfriendly wagers aside. Jeff, and one of our best newbies (even though he doesn't do paragraphs well), LA's #1 Rocket Fan, bring up good points. If we have this much of a problem trying to figure out where the hell Eddie Griffin is going to play, think about the matchup horrors for opposing coaches he adds to our lineup! Rudy can go small-ball with the Moochie, Steve, and Cat in the lineup. Against the likes of Don Nelson's freak attacks, we can have Griffin man the post.

Here's a bizarre scenario : could Eddie Griffin, if he bulks up and grows an inch or 3, eventually be a replacement for Hakeem? His defense/intimidation seems to already be there. He's got the offensive moves from everything I've read this off-season. He's a better ball-handler than Hakeem (but then so are most tree stumps). He's got the explosiveness. He just hasn't filled out the body. Of course he hasn't played any real competition yet, either and my guess is he'll get bullied around by larger PF's inside initially.

I'm happy nobody can figure out what the hell he is at this point; that usually means either the player is a tweener with no future or a freak with all kinds of abilities. I think it's safe to assume Eddie is the latter.

Woo hoooooo... can't wait for the season to start and can't wait for NBA League Pass! [IMG]

btw- Griffin is not 6'10 and still growing. That's a crock of ****. How many good PFs are there in this league that are 220? Even 2 guards like Vince or Kobe are bulkier than that.

I've seen Griffin shoot in COLLEGE. You know, that place where most players go before the NBA? His career didn't just start a few days ago in Rocket training camp. He was a pretty good shooter from what I saw and he can only get better.

I can really see him being abused by other PFs on the defensive end. He's a prototypical SF.

Just curious -- did you just now send me the interview text because I just got it about 10 minutes ago (but the date stamp of the email is messed up -- 5 hours in the future)

Anyhow, it's up. Great job!

Ralph Sampson thought he was a PG in a C's body.

Flutie here is a list of players that are either listed as a power forward or center or both by their teams. You will notice that Davis, Ratliff and Garnett were all selected as all stars this past year. Camby and O’Neal are considered two of the better centers in the east. Larry Johnson is a former all star and Jamison is a probable all star in the near future. The point is that all of these players are in the same range of weight as Eddie Griffin who this time last year was a mere 205 lbs according to the Seton Hall Pirates Mens Basketball Home Page. Many different articles have listed EG at 6’9.5” to 6’10.5” and up to 222lbs. I think it is safe to say that EG is still growing and already has the bulk to compete against these players. Just the facts.

Marcus Camby
Height: 6-11
Weight: 225 lbs.

Antonio Davis
Height: 6-9
Weight: 230 lbs.

Kevin Garnett
Height: 6-11
Weight: 220 lbs.

Antawn Jamison
Height: 6-9
Weight: 223 lbs.

Larry Johnson
Height: 6-7
Weight: 235 lbs.

Bo Outlaw
Height: 6-8
Weight: 210 lbs.

Joe Smith
Height: 6-10
Weight: 225 lbs.

Stromile Swift
Height: 6-9
Weight: 225 lbs.

Tim Thomas
Height: 6-10
Weight: 230 lbs.

Jermain O’neal
Height: 6-11
Weight: 230 lbs.

Theo Ratliff
Height: 6-10
Weight: 225 lbs.

Crash, although I agree w/ your point, this list is rather misleading:

Camby, Davis, Garnett, Outlaw, O'neal, and Ratliff have all gained considerable weight since entering the league and these stats are in no way current.

Jamison and Thomas play the 3.

LJ has weighed in excess of 260lbs. for several yrs now.

Smith gets beat up under the basket continuously and Swift doesn't even get PT b/c he indeed has no position.

I think EG will definitely spend most of his career at the 4, but these players' dimensions don't support my argument. What is more convincing is their skill level, ie. Davis and Outlaw are tenacious rebounders like EG and Ratliff/O'Neal/Camby are strong shot-blockers.

In short, many big players play small (see MoT) and some small players play big. I think EG fits the latter.

I pulled these stats straight off their team page. If you have stats that are more up to date and accurate then I would love to see them. BTW these players were listed as power forwards or centers on their teams page. Jamison did play a lot of PF last year. Davis, O'Neal and Ratliff are both considered undersized but manage to get the job done very effectively

Flutie, Griffin is 6'10" and still growing. At 222lbs he is just as bulky as many of the 4s in the league and as big as some of the 5s (see Antonio Davis and Theo Ratliff both played the 5 last year).

Jeff, according to reports from both the Cali Summer Leagues and the Rocky Mountain Leagues, Griffin seems to have a little trouble comming out on the floor to guard people. However he does seem to be exellent guarding someone face up close to the basket. At least this is what I have taken out of the reports from DarkHorse and LAFan.

Crispee, if Rudy T has serious plans on playing EG at the 3 this season then why doesn't he give him a little time at the 3 in the summer leagues to see how he fares? Unless I have missed something Eddie has played almost exclusively at the 4. Once again perhaps someone that has actually seen the games can comment if that is not a true statement.
