He was a big bonus intl signee (Top 30 in his class) who held his own as a teenager in full season ball. He appeared to have the body and swing to add power and didn’t strike out a lot. He also appeared to be able to stick at SS and scouts were throwing out Hanley Ramirez and Edgar Renteria comps. There was a lot to like about him in 2018-2019.
Fair enough. I don’t typically ever get excited until k see numbers and I don’t remember him ever having anything numbers wise to be impressed with. And typically when I say numbers I want AA but will occasionally look at A. I’m a big league fan not a prospector, but I do keep an eye on the high draft picks and guys over performing on places like crawfish boxes and here. I appreciate the work y’all do here.
I'm very similar. It takes something really special in A or A+ for me to get excited about a prospect numbers-wise.
Meanwhile, I think every 18 year old is the next superstar if they strike out less than 20% of the time in the DSL.
I don’t think much of A ball stats unless they are put up by a teenager playing SS or CF, in which case I consider them pretty meaningful. You can filter down the list of guys who hit well as teenagers in full season ball and the track record is pretty strong. But that’s why I was pretty high on Nova in 2018-2019.
Astros DFA Matijevic and Madris. I’m fine with letting Madris go but I think someone will claim Matijevic; he has a chance to be a pretty good MLB hitter.
Astros released 2019 8th round pick Luis Guerrero. He was an interesting prospect with power/speed and some defensive ability but never really hit. He is the highest drafted prospect to be released from the Astros 2019 class.
J.J. looked really over matched last year. 35.2% K rate with 2.8% BB rate at age 26 after significant AA and AAA experience. He's not Joe Perez trying to hit in MLB at age 22 with only 1/2 a season at AA. He is very limited defensively and half a dozen lefty hitting OF potential 1B/DH bats in the system have passed him. I'm wish him well but am fine moving on from him.
Yeah, I feel like he's got a small chance of being a Luke Voit type player, but even that isn't super valuable. Not sure I'd rather give him an AB than Hensley or Dirden or whoever.
Matijevic and Madris were both on my DFA list but neither was at the top of it. Dubin, Bielak, & Paredes remain.
Anyone have any info on Drew Gilbert and his recovery? What team will he start out at, high A? If so, I assume he will move up to AA sometime during the season and maybe AAA depending on how he recovers. On a somewhat separate note, I didn't realize we got Yainer Diaz AND Maton in the Myles Straw trade. Was a great trade by Click and forced Dusty's hand a bit on McCormick eventually. Same with getting rid of Siri for basically Mancini but it is still possible Siri puts it together but unlikely. McCormick is like that guy in movies that just keeps surviving and no one knows how. Will be interesting to see what our plans are with Meyers, Leon, and Gilbert when he is ready. Let's hope at least one of them steps up as CF depth is something teams will obviously pay a lot for at the trade deadline as we have seen the last 2 seasons.
Don't forget that they got Murray in the Mancini deal too. In a couple of years, you could be saying the same things you said about the Straw for Maton/Diaz deal.
I have seen conflicting reports on where Gilbert will start. We will probably find out tomorrow. For now my guess is he starts at Fayetteville. But either way if he performs well he will be in corpus by the middle/end of the year which puts him on track to reach the majors sometime next season.
The AAA roster appears to be updated: C: Lee, Berryhill, Correa IF: Perez, Machado, Kessinger, Bannon OF: Adolph, Leon, Dirden, Costes P: Whitley, Bielak, Dubin, Tamarez, Murray, Solis, France, Endersby, Garcia, Gage, Davis, Buttrey, Paredes, Record, Hansen No major surprises, good signs for Kessinger and Solis.
I saw this a few days ago, was there another report claiming this was wrong or that he might start in Low-A?
I am pretty sure I saw a clip of Brown saying he would start in Fayetteville. I could be wrong though.
. Oh okay, I just saw McTaggart's article yesterday on D.Brown/Gilbert where he says Gilbert's expected to start at "High-A Fayetteville". McTaggart making sure he's correct lol. I guess we'll find out soon
Correa skipping AA is kinda interesting. Wonder how his development as a catcher is going, was thinking that would be his best shot at getting to the bigs.
I think Correa is only in AAA because they need a true utility option while they are short 2 position players. Correa is one of the few players in the system who can play any position. It is a good opportunity for him, since if he shows he can compete at that level it obviously makes him a lot more likely to be able to play in the majors, but I think it’s more a roster need than an indication of Correa’s talent level or readiness.
