Is Jim Jackson to us the same as Vlade Divac to the Kings?

Jim Jackson had been a cancer for all his career, until he became a Rocket last year. All of a sudden, in his mid-30's, he turned from a headcase to a veteran leader, a reason and voice in the lockroom, and a clutch time performer. Many Rockets fans are assuming he will continue to be the leader in this new Rockets team after our blockbuster trade, since neither Yao nor T-Mac has the personality of a leader, at least not yet.

While I am happy that Jackson has contributed positively to our team, I am alittle concerned about the fact that we have unanimously given the leadership role to a 34 years old role player. It reminds me of what the Kings did to Divac.

Divac is said to be the "godfather" and "emotional leader" of the Kings, based on NBA analysts. Chris Webber said the Kings is "Vlade's team". In these past two years, people are constantly claiming that the window is closing because of the aging of Divac. Now, he's too old and is sent to LA to enjoy a retirement plan, and people are screaming that Kings are done. Somehow, Divac had become a irreplaceable figure in Sacramento, and the team's stars (Webber, Peja, Bibby...) don't seem to be able to win without him.

Now, if Jackson ever becomes that figure to the Rockets, will Yao and T-Mac become increasingly reliant to his "leadership role", and thus undermine their own ability to be the leader? In two more years, when Jackson turns 36 and can't do anymore and gets traded or dumped in the FA oblivion, Yao will be 26 and T-Mac 27, are we going to be left with two stars in their primes without leadership ability?

It's not too much of a concern, just a little one.

Jimmy Jackson was never a cancer. He got into it with Kidd and Mashburn and some people started labeling him a cancer, when in fact he was well liked on the teams that he played on. Also, nobody has bestowed Jimmy Jackson the leader. Some fans on the message board thought he could be a leader, but nobody has uanimously voted him the leader, and I never heard anything that said that Jimmy Jackson was the leader of the team last year. He adds veteran experience but nobody has said Jimmy Jackson is the leader. Tracy McGrady will probably be the leader, and he did a good job of that, save for the bad season they had last year. Vlade Divac and Jimmy Jackson can't be compared at all because nobody on the Rockets ever called the Rockets "Jimmy's team", called him the leader or said that he was even the emotional leader. Jackson's role is very similar to Rick Fox's role when Fox was healthy during their championship runs. A veteran who is respected, but not mentioned as the leader.

In fact, to shoot down the theory that Jackson was a cancer his entire career until he came to the Rockets, Jackson was actually on the Kings before he came to the Rockets, and he was VERY well liked there, and the Kings fans and players were upset that Jackson was allowed to walk, but the Kings didn't have the money. He was also well liked in Miami, I believe the team he played on before jumping to Sacramento. Outside of the Dallas incident his first year in the league or so, I haven't heard anywhere where Jackson was considered a cancer. Unfortunately he got put in a position similar to Dale Ellis, and Rick Pierce, and Michael Cage, a hired gun.

I remember reading a long time ago that he beatup Scott Brooks in the locker room at half time because Brroks took a shot instead of passing the ball to JJ.

Tracy was never the leader in Orlando. Darrell Armstrong was until they decided to replaced him with Tyronn Lue.

Leaders who are not their teams' best players (e.g. Divac, Armstrong, Avery Johnson) are usually mature (old) and smart guys who works hard. Jim Jackson fits the bill.

The only thing that prevent Yao from being the leader is his deferring personality and the cultural barrier. I won't be surprised, however, if he evolves into the team's leader some years down the road at the later part of his career.

I don't know enough about TMac. We'll see if he will take up the role.

Divac leaving Sacramentio has next to nothing to do with people saying the window has closed for the Kings. It has everything to do with the fact that Webber is damn near crippled, Peja has proven to choke in the playoffs, the rest of the team is getting older and many of them are have missed the playoffs due to injuries.
