on 30 Mar 2023, an emphatic FU,

    Disney stood by its actions.

“All agreements signed between Disney and the District were appropriate, and were discussed and approved in open, noticed public forums in compliance with Florida’s Government in the Sunshine law,” the company said. Documents for the February 8 meeting show it was noticed in the Orlando Sentinel as required by law.

    The Ineptness of DeSantis

Board members picked by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to oversee the governance of Walt Disney World said Wednesday that their Disney-controlled predecessors passed restrictive covenants that
strip the new board of many of its powers.

The current supervisors of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District said at a meeting that their predecessors last month signed a development agreement with the company that

gave Disney maximum developmental power over the theme park resort's 27,000 acres in central Florida.

I think I'm going to trust the Disney execs on this one. They're making plenty of money. One assumption you seem to keep making is that Disney is laying off valued workers because they somehow can't afford to employ them anymore. That's not how this works. Corporations get payroll bloat over time and a periodic round of layoffs allows them to slim their payroll burdens without materially hurting their operations or revenues because they're eliminating workers who, bluntly, don't earn their keep. Maybe many of them have talent, maybe they were doing great work, but from the corporation's perspective they're all replaceable and their roles can be consolidated. Sure, some companies facing real distress are forced to do layoffs for survival, but that's not Disney's situation. They're doing it to make even more money for shareholders. If their profits were twice as big as they are now, they'd still do the layoffs because the shareholder would prefer to get yet even more money.

It's funny, but I don't think Disney's victory over DeSantis will be long-lived. DeSantis will now feel compelled by his authoritarian nature to mount another retaliation. And he has a lot of power in Florida while Disney is pretty much stuck in that state. They can fund friendlier politicians, but they'd still have to be some kind of maga republicans to win Floridian elections no matter how much Disney money they get.
