Focus Features has premiered the first trailer for Wes Anderson’s new film “Asteroid City” which will score a limited release on June 16th before expanding a week later on June 23rd through Focus Features.

The trailer showcases Anderson’s usual style of meticulously crafted shot compositions and high color saturation, but this time opts for a high exposure, low contrast and almost sunburnt film look that evokes 1950s postcards and artwork. That visual aesthetic will likely lead to some polarising reactions.

Though not official as yet, the film is very likely to be premiering in May at the Cannes Film Festival in the same way his “Moonrise Kingdom” and “The French Dispatch” have done in the past.

Set in a fictional American desert town circa 1955, the itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention (organized to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition) is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events.

The cast mixes familiar Anderson regulars and new to an Anderson film. The packed ensemble includes Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jason Schwartzman, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Stephen Park, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie, Tony Revolori, Jake Ryan and Jeff Goldblum.

Bill Murray was also due to star but, due to COVID, he ended up being replaced by Steve Carell. Anderson wrote the film with Roman Coppola and produces it with Steven Rales and Jeremy Dawson.

Looks like it hits a lot of the same beats as his previous films, but I admittedly still enjoy those wide lens symmetrical shots.

It would be cool if there was a Wes Anderson day each year. Everyone talks with the same cadence and same mannerisms as his films.

Wes Anderson is awesome, he's the tex-metrosexual, non-pedophile simulacrum of Woody Allen.

I don't think I'm in the appropriate income bracket to enjoy this film.

Maybe catch it on the Stream
I cannot see the benefit of this in a theater versus the stream
