Last night, I saw a possum on my back porch eating my cat's food. The poll question is what should I do?
Possum supposedly have 50 sharp teeth that are not shy about showing. The trouble for this one is that he/she is only 2-3 lbs, so I am not sure what it scare.
Being from Louisiana, I'ma have to go with the "Kill It" option, and get some family recipies for ya right away...
http://www.gamecalls.net/wildgamerecipes/opossumrecipes.html i find this kinda gross, i once had a possum in my garbage can eatin garbage, so i just went in the house got the .45 and shot it, so im going with option 1
YUMMY. Reminds me of the "Favorte" Standup Comedian thread... Jeff FoxWorthy: "If you forward URLs of POSSUM recipes to your chat buddies... you must be a RedNeck..."
Killing one opossum in your backyard is like swatting one mosquito... futile. There will always be another one that will move in to the territory. One thing you can do is not leave exposed food sources like dogfood or garbage cans without lids around your yard. If left to only their their natural food sources opossums will eat lots of other nuisances in your yard like cockroaches, ants, snakes, rats , mice and snails. I'd rather have opossums than cockroaches.
Move the food inside for a while, and the possum will go to the next house. I've had them on the back porch lots. We live near Rice Village. Nice area, but its full of rats and possums. The rats walk on the power lines. Very nice during a backyard party to have rats scamper by overhead. We had a possum in the kitchen once. Gave the wife quite a start. Big possums (sic?- opossi?) can be quite unpleasant with cats. You wouldn't want to find kitty dead on the doorstep.
We have families of opossums and raccoons in our backyard and we are less than 5 miles from downtown Houston. They don't bother anyone. They have NEVER fought with any of the outdoor cats. We just leave them be.
If you say stuff like, "I'm rounding up the opossi in the backyard" and you're not talking about a barbeque... you might be a Redneck.
We used to have a cat who, when he was with his original family, killed a possom in the woodlands. That's all I've got
We've got possums that hang around. My neighbor has 2 chickens and a rooster and the possums will occassionally come to attack them. I was incredulous that a possum would attack a chicken, so I googled it. I found a message board dedicated to raising chickens and so now I have it on good authority that possums will kill chickens (they like to eat the heads, apparently). Last time I asked him, my neighbor had killed 3 possums. He didn't want to shoot them with a gun, because we're in the 3rd Ward and neighbors don't like hearing gunshots, so he beats them to death with a stick. My dog has attacked 2 possums so far. But, they play possum on her and she doesn't kill them. The first time, he had me faked out. I went inside to get a plastic bag to dispose of the body, but he was gone when I came back out. The second time, I considered grabbing a stick and beating him to death -- for my neighbor's sake -- but I don't really have the stomach for that sort of thing. I'm hoping the two coons that have escaped my neighbor's house don't come back to eat the chickens. I'm sure a coon can kill a chicken a lot more efficiently than a possum could. In fact, I wonder what those coons could be feeding on now that they're loose.
one of my east texas, back-woods fraternity brothers caught a mean possum with his bare hands at one of our brothers apartments. then he just tossed it off the 3rd story balcony. i think it survived, but the impact was pretty brutal. crazy stuff.
