Really liked the first film, felt like it was one of the films along with braveheart/lotr that helped kick off an era where people hacked **** up with swords. My defining memory however is probably that the arena scene where Maximus uses the shield to hit the former champion in the facemask would cause my friend's cheap Yamaha receiver to shut down. It was the high pitched ringing sound that would do it for some reason, and was something we were able to repeat multiple times :D

Many of his recent movies have been unimpressive, but Prometheus and The Martian were excellent.

Gladiator is my all time favorite movies. I’ve literally seen it over 100 times. I used to play it in the car and didn’t even have to watch, I could visualize the movie with the music and dialogue.

The beginning scene battle music is so epic. Lisa Gerard. Hans Zimmer. So so good.

Edit: so I was just confirming that it was Hans that did that soundtrack and saw he was sued by the estate of Gustov Holst. I knew it always had a familiar sound to it. It’s totally the bridge section (or whatever the proper term is) for The Planets: Jupiter — which is probably my all time favorite “classical” song.
Listen to “Jupiter” then listen to “The Battle.”

This movie was in my top 5 for a long time. I’ve watched it at least 50 times.

“My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the TRUE emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.”

I recently saw a Houston Symphony concert of Holtz's The Planets. That was my immediate thought when it got to the Jupiter movement. It was so close I just assumed the moviemakers paid for the rights and used that in their movie. I had no idea it was an outright ripoff. I think a lot of properties rip off parts of The Planets. Obviously Mars is a very popular movement in cinema but there was a part in one of the movements that struck me as sounding a LOT like some music I remember hearing in one of the Legend of Zelda games (I think Ocarina of Time).

There's a card game called Superfight. It's similar to Cards Against Humanity except you have character cards and super power cards and create heros and villains that then "fight" each other. But the fight is really just making an argument of why your character would do well against the opponent. Many of the cards are very silly, which makes the game fun with the right crowd.

Anyway, if you get a generic character card like "vampire" or "wizard" you can choose to be a specific example of that in pop culture. One night I got the character card "Gladiator". When I laid the card down to introduce my character, I ripped off the above quote verbatim. It felt like a badass moment. Of course, then I had to explain that my character's superpowers were that he had feet for hands and a shotgun that shoots shotguns.

    But still, badass intro.
