Some of you don't realize what a luxury it is to even have a place like Galveston only a short drive away. Yeah the water isn't turquoise and the beaches could be slightly cleaner but the way Houstonians just dump on Galveston is crazy. Most of the world could only dream of having such a place nearby. And its not overrun and unaffordable like other beach communities.

Houstonians dump in the water around Galveston not on the island.

Headed there as well. Eventually I'll buy a beach house there, but the Air B&B craze has at least tripled prices there and I'm still digesting the cost increase, sort of turns my stomach and irritates me that I missed out on buying one for $250k just a few years ago.

This is so true. People travel to Galveston from all over the country (and world). It's fun, affordable, family-friendly and accessible. And kids give zero ****s about the color of the water, it's the beach to them.

I have always loved going to Galveston. Besides the beach its a lot of fun to explore the actual city and see all of the history of the island.

We are lucky to have Galveston closer to us. Lot of fun things to do there. I know Houston has a lot of offers, but I just like to be near the water.

Y'all should check out Rudy and Paco's if you've never been. But don't show up in beach attire or they'll turn you away. It's a great restaurant.

Haven't been in years but that was a family getaway for us in the 70s and 80s.

Rudy and Paco's is pretty damn good. Little pricey, but that's fine.

I don't take advantage of Galveston like I did when I was in high school. Now all I think about is traffic and overpriced hotels.............sucks getting older. We used to go down with a few pick up trucks with a cheap portable grill and grill hot dogs and drink beer and have a great time

The people who avoid it because of the color of the water are really missing out.

Driving around town, it's amazing how little it has changed since we were kids - which is awesome if you're a nostalgic native Houstonian like me.

If you're a drunk college kid looking to hook up with other drunk college kids...yeah, you should probably stick with Padre Island. But if you're looking for a fun family vacation that doesn't involve flying anywhere, you can't beat Galveston.

Portuguese Man-O-Wars are insane right now. Hundreds on the beach alone and two of the kids got stung, but it was mild and we had vinegar and topical Benadryl on hand.

Still, it’s beautiful and peaceful to just sit and watch the waves in their endless majesty.

I mean I enjoyed my time when I went there when I was in my early 20s. Not trying to be a beach snob but brown foam on brown water on brown sand and tar on my feet - pass
