I really think this was a mistaken identity thing, the cartels truthfully don’t like to target non-combatants or tourists unless they make themselves involved - That said I’ve been to Cancun twice and I will never go to Mexico again- I value my life too much

 

I go to Matamoros 3x a year to visit grandparents and family. I never drive my vehicles across and instead rent a basic toyota/hyundai sedan to blend in as much as possible. I never cross the border late at night, and once I get to where I'm going, my car stays parked and I ride with family in their mexican vehicles. When we leave the house, we never speak english and avoid drawing attention to ourselves.

This is going to keep me from going down there for a while, which is unfortunate because my grandparents are aging fast and I want to spend as much time with them as possible.

I never run into issues, but then again, I blend in well. I've heard about scary things that happen down there, and thankfully my family has never come across these bad hombres.
