not really, more of a overemphasized paraphrase. Actual quote: "I still feel that Yao Ming could be the second coming of LaRue Martin, the big man who was a first-round bust of the Portland Trail Blazers in 1972." "My gut feeling tells me the Rockets are making a mistake, baby, in evaluating their overall No. 1 pick. Still, Rudy T could shock America by having NBA commissioner David Stern announce Williams' name as the top pick. Then Houston would be moving toward the winner's circle." - Dick Vitale, ESPN.com, 6/21/02
at less yao made 17 points a game that are pretty good with the help of Juwan & McGrady this team could avg. 50 pts per game with out JJ Pike Lue Taylor Boki
Not as bad as the Sportingnews Radio guy saying, during the draft, that 3-4 years down the line Yao Ming will be considered the biggest bust in NBA history. He kept repeating it until he tried to get Rick Barry to say it (who had seen Yao Ming play a lot) and Barry basically responded that people who say that don't know basketball. In light of the article, and to repeat points already made, in Toronto McGrady was considered to be a defender in the Pippen mode. Van Gundy said he was the biggest nightmare offensively and defensively to coach against in the playoffs.
Exactly. I'm tired of Mcgrady being called a "loser" after one bad year. What about the 2 previous years where he single-handedly carried the Magic into the playoffs with no supporting cast? What about his 30+ playoff scoring average? What about carrying his 8th seeded team to a 3-1 lead over the #1 seed, coming so close to one of the biggest upsets in NBA history? The guy had one bad year, and they discount the rest of his track record.
People want to dog houston while they still have a chance, but thats all about to change. Times running out all you houston hatters.
Yoa does set moving picks, especially in the playoffs. But so do Duncan, Malone, and most other big men. The fact that Rosen mentioned this just proves that he's a hater. But that was obvious.
Well, this was a funny article in a way because I think the guy must be from Orlando. Those lazy cracks are true only to Orlando fans. And the moving picks from Yao. I think he sets textbook picks - which Steve couldn't use properly. I bet TMac will use them to full advantage. And that low-blow to J Howard is pretty much from left field. What 17pts is not good enough??? I love to have Cato make 17pts... every 3 games. Anyways, it's good that there are doubter out there. It's more fun to make them eat it.
I didn't think the story was that bad. Hard to comment on the T-mac stuff because I don't watch him play much. Yao does set moving screens though (except for the time he laid out GP!).
Yeah, that is pretty preposterous to put down a guy that averages 17.8 pts, 7.4 rebounds, and 47.1% FG over a 14 year career.
Can you guys honestly tell me that you don't see Yao set a moving screen at the top of the key at least once every game? Most big men get away with it (not just all-stars like Duncan and Shaq), but most big men also set crappy picks because they're more focused on teeing up for a shot or sprinting to the basket afterwards.
I honestly don't see Yao set moving picks. He is sooooo big. The world is moving when he sets a pick. It's not move once the pick is set and the offensive player passes by. He cannot move into the defensive play but I NEVER see him do that. So where is the moving part? He is suppose to move once the pick is set. He is NOT a tree to go around.
Something tells me that this guy hates any player that threatens the throne of Michael Jordan and his master Phil Jackson. Doesn't Rosen also hate Kobe?
Ok... Let's say everything he said is true. Who was the last player that JVG couldn't convince to play their heart out? I honestly cannot remember a single one. JVG has effectively convinced every single player to play harder than they've ever played in their entire lives. T-Mac cited JVG as a reason for coming to Houston - he knows what he's getting into. This guy is a dumbass. He has no proof for what he's saying, and even if it's true, chances are they won't turn into his conclusion. Fact of the matter is, we have the best C in the West. That requires a double team in the post every single time. We have one of the top 2 SG's in the league, and that requires a double team on the perimeter every single time. That's 4 defenders on 2 players, and we all know that can't and won't happen. One of these guys will be open. Has such a duo ever failed to become a contender? A top 2 C and a top 2 SG? Given the right coach and right supporting players (Juwan and JJ are perfect), this expirement can't fail. This guy will eat his words.
