Since most of the major FA acquistions are drying up, let's compare the numbers of our remaining options at the center position.

Using Shaq as the bench mark for judging today's centers, I worked up some numbers for comparing them with. Obviously, I can't take into consideration things like strength of schedules, injuries, teammates, coaching, etc....

What I've done is to take Shaq's number of minutes & games played for last season(starter's minutes) & used them as a way of comparing everyone's points per game, rebounds per game, & blocks per game on an even playing field(or semi-even). Then, I took each players total points, rebounds, & blocks & divided them by the number of minutes that they actually played. I then took Shaq's total minutes (2,924) & multiplied the number from each player by that & then divided that number by Shaq's total games played (74) to come up with each players per game average, if they had all played the same number of minutes & games as Shaq did. I know it's not rocket science, but it works. [IMG]

The players that I've chosen to use are the players that could actually be available to us through free agency or trades & our own players (assuming that Dream doesn't make a career out of his decision). I've also shown Shaq's actual numbers as a bench mark for comparison.

    SHAQ

    age: 29
    games
    played: 74
    min.
    played: 2,924
    PPG: 28.7
    RPG: 12.7
    BPG: 2.76
    Salary: $21,428,572

The PPG, RPG, & BPG will have two sets of numbers. The first set is their actual numbers from last year & the second set are the extrapolated numbers.

    MILLER/ SABONIS/ JACKSON
    age: [25] [37] [26]
    games
    played: [57] [61] [48]
    min
    played: [1,434] [1,299] [1,410]
    PPG: [8.9/13.91] [10.1/18.73] [13.2/17.72]
    RPG: [7.4/11.55] [5.4/10.08] [7.5/10.11]
    BPG: [.67/1.05] [1.02/1.89] [.56/.76]
    Salary: [$4.4 mill] [$2 mill ?] [$5 mill ?]

    DREAM/ CATO/ COLLIER
    age: [38] [27] [24]
    games
    played: [58] [35] [23]
    min
    played: [1,545] [624] [222]
    PPG: [11.9/17.64] [4.7/10.45] [3.1/12.62]
    RPG: [7.4/11.04] [4.0/8.92] [1.6/6.59]
    BPG: [1.52/2.25] [.89/1.96] [.13/.53]
    Salary: [$10 mill ?] [$6.048 mill] [$1.28 mill]

    KEON CLARK
    age: 26
    games
    played: 81
    min
    played: 1,720
    PPG: 9.0/14.69
    RPG: 5.4/9.98
    BPG: 2.39/3.54
    Salary: $1,971,116

We always thought Cato sucked, but these numbers really prove it. Collier can be forgiven, because he was a rookie & is still learning.

It looks like Sabonis would be the best short term solution for the money, compared to Dream's demands. If they sign Sabonis for one year, then I would guess that they'll be going after LaFrentz next year.

Clark would be a great, young, long term solution & he's real cheap. His numbers actually went up when he went to Toronto, so obviously the players & coaches around him & the system made a difference with him.

Oh well. I hope this helps & doesn't cause anymore confusion than we already have.

toddie, absolutely agree on both Sabonis & LaFrentz.

    Using your methodology:

    SHAQ

    age: 29
    games
    played: 74
    min.
    played: 2,924
    PPG: 28.7
    RPG: 12.7
    BPG: 2.76
    Salary: $21,428,572

    LaFrentz
    age: [25]
    played: [78]
    min played: [2,457]
    PPG: [12.9 / 15.4]
    RPG: [ 7.8 / 9.3]
    BPG: [ 2.64 / 3.2]
    Salary: [2002 est - $11.0 mill?]

Man if the Rockets could get LaFrentz I could see them getting a 5 seed in the playoffs and advancing at least to the 2nd round! Man!

Good formula. I tried the same thing a couple weeks ago looking at SFs, but your formula is more developed...

    Sabonis @ 1yr would be a STEAL.

It somehow doesn't strike me that Brad Miller could average 14 and 12 per game for us. Plus Sabonis' rebounding couldn't possibly double next year, despite our rebounding troubles. Clark is undersized for center, so I think our best bet would be Miller, who could probably average about a double-double.

Sabonis might be a good short term answer (1 year deal). I'm not up for giving Jackson a 5 yr deal off of one good season for a terrible team (who's front line was injured all yr by the way). I'm for anything that will not waste cap room for next year.

It appears Sabonis wishes to play one more year in Portland and then retire.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news/ap/20010721/ap-trailblazers-anderson.html

"Also, the Blazers could soon re-sign free agent center Arvydas Sabonis. According to local media reports, the 36-year-old Lithuanian has said he wants to play one more season in Portland before retiring. He likely will have to take a big cut from the $10 million he made last season."

I see LaFrentz as Marc Jackson with more range.

Uhhh... and LaFrentz can actually block shots. The guy's a major threat, with over 2 rejections a game. Jackson had .5 per game.

Oh, and LaFrentz has a bit better of a post game. It's not great, but he's more capable from what I've seen.

    Calvin Booth

    PPG 12.3
    RPG 10.45
    BPG 4.65
    SPG 1.16

Oh, he'd also get 6.27 fouls per game. Is that a problem?

The one glaring stat that stands out to me, is the number of games that these players missed. I think that stat alone, shows why a team needs at least two quality big men to play the 4/5 & some adequate role players for depth.

BTW, I know he got a lot of playing time with the Warriors, with Eric Dampier and Adonal Foyle hurt, but isn't having Cato and Collier just like having those two hurt?

Thanks Treeman. It's becoming painfully obvious to me, that I don't have a life. [IMG]

I'm not so sold on Sabonis. We need a center that can handle the rigor of an 82 game season. I do not want to be stuck with Pig Miller running at center for half a season.

Neither am I sold on LaFrentz either. There's nothing to dislike on his stats obviously. However it's my impression of the games I see that LaFrentz's game is pretty darn weak at the center position.
