this may be true but let not that distract you from the fact that alperen sengun is already a solid defender! a definite positive contributor on that end!

Sadly when you're bottom of the league on offense and defense, then the problem is both offense and defense. We can't score AND can't defend. It's because the roster is not good enough to not suck at both those things. The fulcrum of our offense is not great and the fulcrum of our defense is bad. On any side of the court, the other 4 players are at a disadvantage. Our spacing is bad too.

On offense at least, I hope to see Sengun (primary) and Tyty mature some more as playmakers and I'm confident by next season they can probably manage a decent NBA offense.

On defense I think Jabari, Garuba, Eason and Christopher have shown tremendous potential. KPJ can do it but has not done it this season for whatever reason. Add Tate to that group and next season we should have a nice group of defenders who are mostly 2nd and 3rd year players which is when players develop the most.

Still, some vet help is needed in running the offense and anchoring the defense if they want to attempt making the playins next season.

Haliburton and Sengun with wings that keep their matchups in check would be devastating.
When Sabonis was with Indiana the experts claimed Sabonis couldn't guard a wet Kleenex. Now Indy has the lego man, who many here covet, and they struggle even more.

With players like Sengun, who can run a prolific offense, you take the good with the bad and work around it not throw out the baby with the bath water. The Jalen and Alpi 2 man game is a good brand of basket but we're too good for that apparently.

If we had Turner, this team would still be getting destroyed.

We're not even 10% into the season, but these first 7 games have shown us a lot regarding what a competent coach and above average guard/wing defenders can do in creating a top 10 defense.

When I started this thread last season, it was obvious to me JG and KPJ were the worst defensive guard duo in the league w/ one of the worst coaches ever, and the problem wasn't Sengun. However, there were A LOT of people thinking Sengun was a below average (or even horrible) defender. Also, we are accustomed to seeing great defensive centers as those who block/alter shots aka rim running centers, but there is a great deal of bias regarding these players - Hassan Whiteside, Ayton, etc - bad defensively.

Sengun is a totally different type of defensive player who focus more on rotations, IQ, and fundamentals, which may be more important than blocking/altering shots. I thought he was at minimum an average defender last year, but this year there is no question in my mind he will reach above average status w/ Udoka as the coach and better defensive wings/guards.

Has anyone changed their mind on Sengun defensively due to his recent play?

I knew that the Problem dont was Sengün. Defense is not an action for one or two player. You must defend as team. You see, that everyone hold his enemie and help each other. FVV and DB gives a strong hold to this young roaster. An intelligent player like Sengün, can also defend well.

Sengun has always hustled. I never understood the hate on his defense. We all knew Silas piss poor schemes couples with our guards matador defense was making Sengun extra bad. I don't claim that Sengun was a good defender, or even average, but definitely wasn't this horrible defender. He was always trying really hard.

BTW after skimming the topic, I am waiting for Alperen to become full time PG at this point, everything hakeem94 predicted has been gradually happening. What do I know

there is a group of basketball fans who doesn’t see guards missing their rotation, or not closing a space to give up a drive, etc. They just want some imaginary ‘athletic’ creature at the back to block/alter all shots. These guys won’t change their opinion. Same guys think kpj is better than fvv because he is ‘talented’, can pass his man one on one although fvv makes the whole team better. And quite unbelievably defense and offense improved in such a short time. This is how bad Silas and kpj were.

    Are you sure?

This thread said he was an above average defender last year.

That was clearly not the case, or else he'd be DPOY level this year given the improvement.

The Rockets - all of them - were terrible defensively last year. Much improved this year

Hakeem94 was like a scientist going against the Catholic church during the dark ages, way ahead of his time. Mob mentality at cfans.net sent him to burn at the stake for daring to speak the truth about Sengun, a prophet stoned for his beliefs.

...also because he went nuts and racist, but he was right about Sengun!

Nah. A decent amount of posters on here were quite high on sengun, man wasn't the only one that like Sengun. Hakeem94 was just more outspoken about it than the rest.
Sure poster was right about sengun, but he was also speaking nonsense how it's likely to find superstars in the lower draft rounds and tanking doesn't work, etc. Man got hit with the ban bc man went crazy and start sprouting nasty stuff.

I’m concerned he may have weak ankles.

Lol I'm assuming this is sarcasm..

Alpi really doesn't have much in the terms of injury history.

Every athlete sprains their ankle here and there.

Hakeem was claiming that Sengun has playmaking like luka or better. Or was better than Harden. As extreme as she was, her takes contained more truth than the haters' takes, with the help of exceptional improvement of Alpi. And she was essentially correct that it was a crime against humanity, how alpi was treated and not developed.

The drafting low is a similar issue. Of course drafting higher is better, but it is more important how you can develop your players, as we have seen with the sharp contrast between Ime and Silas. This is even more true as the median talent increases in the draft and the game gets more complex making pure athletic talent somewhat less important. Many posters here think that tanking and lucking into a player like Bron, wemby etc. is the only solution or taking someone like kpj, and hoping that he will learn the game and/or change his character. Those are pretty bad takes as well.
