I haven't lived in the city in a long while now, but every time I visit I notice how wild the place has become. I've lived in NYC, Boston and LA and the drivers here are much more aggressive than in those areas. They usually follow the rules over there even if they are aggressive. The roads through many parts of town are just terrible as well. Add to the fact that one has to drive everywhere even if you are an inner looper makes this all the more absurd.

Growing up, I never saw motorcycles (ruff ryder/dirtbike types) just going through red lights while popping a wheel. I had never seen a driver wave a pistol at another driver or even an actual brake check on a 75 mph highway in any of the cities I've lived before. I've seen all three in the past year in Houston. It feels like truly a different place in almost every aspect.

Some of the major positives I've seen is that there is significant investment into public parks and green areas. The new areas around Memorial Park are very nice. There are also random parks built into city spaces. I've also seen cool running trails around the Heights as well. Parts of the Heights area are very impressive and reminds me of the South Congress area in Austin. The new shopping centers throughout the city are very neat to see along with the varied food and coffee shops. A lot of new art and culture as well which is really cool.

The city feels grittier, but I actually do like it better than from 20 years ago.

12% of the entire NASA permanent workforce got their education at the University of Houston.
