That pulls the plug on cable channels News 9 San Antonio and News 24 Houston. Belo said it lost almost $19 million on the channels, which went on the air in 2002 and 2003. The Dallas-based media company said it might take a third-quarter charge against earnings for the loss. Time Warner will continue to operate a third joint venture station in Charlotte, N.C. It already is sole operator of the News 8 Austin cable channel in Austin. Belo continues to run its Texas Cable News channel in Dallas. It also owns 19 other television stations and four newspapers, including The Dallas Morning News.
Apparently 190 jobs lost, to be exact: http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=109&STORY=/www/story/07-23-2004/0002216815&EDATE=
The channels are already at a disadvantage by being cable only. IMO News 8 Austin is successful for two reasons, 1) news competition in Austin is weak compared to Houston and 2) live coverage of UT athletic press conferences.
