Can the TE be used in a three-way deal? For example, The Knicks really want Dampier. They offered Othella and Nazr Mohammed. GS doesn't need or want Mohammed now that they have Dale Davis at back-up C. Enter the Rockets. Can we take Nazr Mohammed off the Knicks hands so that they get Dampier and GS gets Othella and the partial TE in a three-way deal? OR, can we truly be the "middle man" for GS/Dampier. GS sign-and-trades Dampier to us for the full TE (6-7 yr contract/starting 6.9 mill) and we send him on to a team needing a C for a PG, back-up big and draft pick (to GS)? Seems like good ways for us to get in the action if it's allowed by the TE rules.
I'm not sure you can or not. I think you can, but again I'm not sure. But I like the idea! Mohammed would be a good backup for Yao. Big body who is tough and rebounds well. I wonder if they would be willing to part with Frank Williams also. He was thier starting pg before they got Marbury. He didn't fit Isiah's up tempo style he is trying to go for, but he would fit well here. Maybe instead of the TE we throw in Taylor. If the Knicks are trading both Harrington & Mohammed, then they would need front court help. But I have a feeling that the Rockets are going to let their TE expire. Using it is, in essence, adding more salary and we are close to the luxury cap limit as it is. Just my gut feeling.
please not give to GSW our TE and help so way them reduce their salary cap . they want our starting center !
Even if GS were a threat to sign Yao (I feel stupid just typing that), they wouldn't be gaining any cap space because they're letting Dampier go anyway. Umm... still waiting on a captologist to answer the original question...
Yes. If the Warriors SnT'd Dampier to the Knicks and GS only wanted Harrington then the Rockets could receive Mohammed's contract by sending a draft pick to either team and/or a lower salary to GS. GS would receive a TE in the amount of $5.3m (less whatever player the Rox might send them) and have 1 year to use it. But I have to question why any team would not want an inexpensive (2 years @ $10.8m), reasonably talented Center along with that players' Bird Rights. Stockpiling talent has never stopped Mark Cuban from wheeling and dealing. Meanwhile, the Hawks have signed who this summer after letting SAR and Rasheed walk for free? Again, unless your goal is to have no contracts at some point in the future, what's the point of not taking in Mohammed? Mohammed expires in 2006 . The Warriors have Foyle's contract beyond that, JRich and Troy Murphy to deal with in 2005 and MD Jr, Claxton and Dickau to deal with in 2006. UPDATE: OK. I just saw the second part of the question and it makes a little more sense. Yes, the Rockets can "broker" a SnT deal of Dampier. Let's say MEM would love to have a power C instead of PF's playing C (Lo and Stro). GS could SnT Dampier to MEM, MEM could send Lo or Stro to HOU and GS could take back nothing but picks and/or cheap contracts. (Lo Wright's deal needs a little tweaking like Adrian Griiffn but it's close). Dampier is unrestricted and can threaten to walk for someones' MLE in which case GS gets nada. By brokering a deal, the Rockets can guarantee GS something and can also get Dampier more than MLE $.
Thanks GATER, Hopefully we can facilitate a trade... and take a little off the top for ourselves. The first scenario, though, of why GS isn't interested in Mohammed is b/c they traded for Dale Davis (at least it's been reported this way). So, the proposal as reported (Othella + Nazr for Dampier) was/is dead in the water. If the Knicks really want Dampier, they can go through us to balance salary and kick in a little extra cheese to GS (a pick) on top of Othella.
