If you were the Warriors GM for a day (I guess that would make you Chris Mullin) what would you do first? Just looking for some interesting thoughts on my home team.. and to see how well versed you guys are on different teams. So other than the obvious (like getting a different hair style) what would you do to get that team out of the cellar. yeah yeah get Yao Ming is gonna be everyones dream next year but what else could he do to build up that team. J
new jerseys, new logo, new colors, clear up cap space, get rid of foyle's contract, get rid of like all big contracts, like atlanta, and with all the whole different look, make golden state a good location for free agents.
I'd take all the money out of Mullin's bank account and send it into my personal account since I'd only be Mullin for a day.
I'd do what Kiki did. Blow up everything. Play Biedrins 30+ minutes per game. Trade all the contracts for cap space and draft picks. Field a team of summer league scrubs on minimum contracts for 82 games. Go back to the retro jerseys for a full season. Pray there's a LeBron or Carmelo or Yao in the draft. What could it hurt? The Warriors havent made the playoffs for a decade anyway. Why not just blow it up instead of commit to being a 37-win team for all of eternity?
I'd do everything that Dharocks said down to the retro jerseys. Then I'd pray for Andriuskevicius in the 05' draft and Greg Oden or Yi Jianlian in the 06' draft. If you're lucky, both of your picks would become the players people believe they'll be and you'll have a hell of a twin towers combination. If they both show promise but the twin towers isn't working so well, you trade one of them for a good point guard and some ideal roleplayers. I might would try to draft for a point guard but the only up and coming point guard I really like right now coming out the draft anytime soon is Mustafa Shakur. Maybe that'll change by the draft. I'd definitely take a few seasons to stock pile young talent and run out the bad contracts and then try to lure some nice free agents in to town once there is enough young talent, just like Kiki did.
I think what he's doing makes sense. He got rid of Jamison, and now he's gotten rid of NVX. There are no other big contracts on that team. He's basically gutted the entire roster. Dale Davis's contract expires maybe next season? After that, you've got Foyle for the MLE, and J. Richardson as perhaps a little more than the MLE. No one else on that team is going to make that much money. Because they are going to stink for the next two years. They will have possibly 2 top 3 picks in the draft. Even if they don't end up getting Yao Ming, they'll have cap to get good players. He's set himself up on maybe a 3 year plan to have a young and exciting team. Rebuilding like this doesn't always work... like the Bulls. But the Warriors weren't going anywhere anyway. If they draft wisely and don't panic and overpay free agents... they will have a lot of opions in a couple of years. I can't disagree with what Mullin has done.
If I were Mullin, I wouldn't have signed two of the most inflated contracts this FA. Foyle and Fisher. I would rather pay minimum for some scrub from summer league. Signing two role players to 6-year contracts is the worst thing to do for a rebuilding team!
No it doesnt make sense. He got rid of Jamison, their best player, because he made the max, signaling that they were going to start being more responsible when it came to handing out contracts. So what do they do just a year later? They give a backup center a near max deal at around 10 million per year. They give Fisher a 6 year full MLE contract(6 mill per year). Those two players deserve nowhere close the the coinage they got, but in Fisher's case it is even more confusing. GS doesn't have an inside presence to score and make plays for them(Murphy is nice, but he is a great roleplayer, no more, no less), so that means they have to rely on their wing players, or suck til they get an inside presence. Fisher doesn't make plays. He can't create for himself, and he doesn't really create for others either. He can play adequate position d and shoot open jumpers when others create for him, big whoop. And Richardson IS going to cost more than the MLE to keep, but with Pietrius(sp?) and MD, I think they've prepared themselves in case they decide to let him walk for a max type deal. If this offseason is any indication of what Mullin brings to the table, expect to continue to be a doormat and always be planning for "a few years ahead". And as far as what I would do ... I would gut the whole team other than MD, Murphy and piet. Ugh, and I would try desperately to get rid of at least one of the horrendous contracts they handed out these past few weeks.
It's reported that"Mully's goal has been to clear enough cap space in two years to make a run at Yao Ming. That was a big reason he wanted to get out from under Jamison's contract.'' funny when I read it...
Foyle is getting paid 6.5 starting next year...$10 mil is the last year IF it's that high. I agree they overpaid for him. Fisher's contract is only ridiculous because of the length. Yeah those are not the greatest signings... but the point is... he's setting himself up to have some good young players in a few year plus lots of money to lure in a big time player.
Well, I'd have Adonal Foyle and Derek Fisher signed for close to 80-million bucks so I'd probably start drinking again.
my plan would be to gut the team .. trade away players w/ high salaries and keep Dunleavy, Piet, Richardson (trade bait), Dampier, Big Dog (trade bait), Tmurphy. Dampier would solidify the middle so I dont have to worry about it anymore. Build around Piet Dunleavy TMurphy Dampier and everyone else is traded for pieces that fit, then see how the progresses and work with the coaching/scouting staff to add pieces. Piet, Dunleavy, TMurphy (lock them into MLE type contracts) Dampier could then be moved as trade bait to a team needing a good big man.. but my focus is on controlling the payroll.. Fisher,Foyle were stupid moves by GSW and they will probably regret that. J
