    We discarded our prison population well before we discarded the homeless.

    Self-segregation into gated communities is a symptom of the same root cause.

    A lawyer in College Station once told me his Houston clients often used to vanish for days in the Harris County jail system.

    Discarded? What are you talking about. We monetized them. The Police-Prison industrial complex is a trillion dollar industry. More than half of the prisons in Texas are run by private companies. Almost every service in jail is outsourced. Inmates are low cost slave labor in many areas.

    If someone could monetize the homeless, they would absolutely get more attention. But it's like herding cats, those crazies and their inability to conform and free will and such.
