I like alot of Public Enemy FIGHT THE POWER I've heard some Dylan but not too too much Runaway Train - 'collective soul?' or something like that Rocket River
Runaway Train is by Soul Asylum. You were on the right track though, I like a lot of Public Enemy, and a bunch of Rage Against the Machine, as well.
Since the name Rage Against the Machine is pretty much about fighting the government, I'm going to say Rage is the best.
I know it's meant as satire, but there is a side of me that would like to see Randy Newman's Political Science literally happen. Paris under a mushroom cloud would be quite a sight.
Anything from Rage rules. Don't care too much for their politics though. But my all time favorite song that best fits this category would have to be Jimi Hendrix's - Machine Gun.
i don't know if it's the best or even my favorite but "redemption song" popped into my head when i read the topic.
Buffalo Springfield For What It's Worth Stephen Stills, 1966 There's something happening here What it is ain't exactly clear There's a man with a gun over there Telling me I got to beware I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down There's battle lines being drawn Nobody's right if everybody's wrong Young people speaking their minds Getting so much resistance from behind I think it's time we stop, hey, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down What a field-day for the heat A thousand people in the street Singing songs and carrying signs Mostly say, hooray for our side It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down Paranoia strikes deep Into your life it will creep It starts when you're always afraid You step out of line, the man come and take you away We better stop, hey, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down Stop, hey, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down Stop, now, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down Stop, children, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down
Rage always had good pissed off stuff. I always like Won't Get Fooled Again by the Who: We'll be fighting in the streets With our children at our feet And the morals when they worship will be gone And the men who spurred us on Sit in judgement of all wrong They decide and the shotgun sings the song I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the change all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again The change, it had to come We knew it all along We were liberated from the foe, that's all And the world looks just the same And history ain't changed 'Cause the banners, they'd all flown in the last war I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the change all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again No, no! I'll move myself and my family aside If we happen to be left half alive I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky For I know that the hypnotized never lie There's nothing in the street Looks any different to me And the slogans are out-phased, by-the-bye And the parting on the left Is now parting on the right And their beards have all grown longer overnight I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the change all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again Meet the new boss Same as the old boss ---- They were like a giant middle finger in a crowd of flower-loving hippies. Somehow, that appeals to me.
Anything by Dead Prez.. Also Springsteen's "41 shots" Its about Amadou Diallo being killed by the NY police. Links about the story: http://www.pww.org/past-weeks-2000/Springsteens Diallo song.htm http://www.post-gazette.com/columnists/20000616tony.asp I dont think this song was on any cd, but you can download it online. Its actually pretty good.
"Dogs" - Floyd "Pigs (Three Different Ones)" - Floyd "Sheep" - Floyd IOW, pretty much the entire "Animals" album by them.
You boys need to listen to some Mr Frank Zappa! I would also add "Volenteers" Jefferson Airplane "What's Going On?" Marvin Gaye "Peace in Our Time" Elvis Costello and the Attractions "Holiday in Cambodia" Dead Kennedys "Two Tribes" Frankie Goes to Hollywood "Strawman" Lou Reed "Once In a Lifetime" Talking Heads "Fortunate Son" CCR so many more...
Alan Jackson: "Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning" I'm just a singer of simple songs I'm not a real political man I watch CNN, but I probably couldn't tell you The difference between Iraq and Iran
a few more Phil Ochs "I Ain't Marching Anymore" John Prine “Sam Stone” Johnny Cash “The Ballad of Ira Hayes”
pretty good one's mcmark. can't believe it took so long for marvin gaye to come up. what's so funny about peace love and understanding by elvis costello ain't bad either. also, i'll add the rolling stone's begger's banquet as a whole. i think it is their best album and is chock full of socio-politcal commentary.
That's got Street Fighting Man right? Yeah that's a great album. But as Stones albums go, I'd have to go with Sticky Fingers as my fav.
