Embarrassing antics from the district. These students are forbidden from learning about or discussing slavery, reconstruction, Jim Crow, or the civil rights movement. Those events are why we have to have a black history month in the first place.

200 students stage walkout at Hillcrest High School in protest over Black History Month program

TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — Over 200 students at Hillcrest High School in Tuscaloosa County participated in a walkout protest Wednesday following controversy involving a Black History Month program.

Students claim that school administration told them their student-run Black History Month program could not reference anything that happened before the 1970s, including slavery, the Black Panthers or the civil rights movement.

Students say they decided to have the walk out in order to have their voices heard.

“I feel like it’s important to talk about that because I feel like in 2023, a lot of our youth don’t know their culture,” student Jamiyah Brown said. “A lot of our youth don’t know how empowerment has brought us this far. This is important to educate our youth on how we came from somewhere to now.”

You know they always felt that way, they just think they don't need to be ashamed of it any more.

I guess the white kids would feel bad about themselves if they learned slavery existed?

The right's attempt to erase history is a bad move. It is a real travesty that people who would dictate such policy were ever promoted to a position of power necessary to enact such ignorant policies

How can you seriously discuss black history without including things before 1970? Could they discuss Rodney King, George Floyd, the killing of James Byrd?

    MTV didn’t want him
But thank god the great powers let it be
The world is a better place because of Michael Jackson

Actually Prince was on MTV before Michael.

Musical Youth's video also predated Michael Jackson's.

The Specials were two-tone but they predated all of the above on MTV.

Slavery, reconstruction, Jim Crow, and segregation are all part of the Alabama social studies curriculum (and yes, the 2010 curriculum is apparently still the current one, but there is a new one up for adoption this year). This article is about one student led black history project which requires focusing on something after 1970. There is no removal of all the mentioned pre-1970 topics from the classroom, it is just not what this assignment was about. Presumably the kids doing the walkout know that, and the media are just making up things for you to be angry about.
