This is an amazing thread to look through which shows what makes a diplomat a diplomat. Look at the thread @dmoneybangbang . You'll never see a president going through a room talking to every regular house member. It never happens. Presidents always come across as elitists and rich and entitled. Everyone in obamas Whitehouse looked down upon biden cuz he wasn't a ivy league grad. Biden would hate obamas advisors and talk crap about them. Biden has always been great at relationships and its why senate Republicans gave him so many wins. It takes great skills to close out trillion dollar foreign policy deals. Biden knows the most important in life. No matter what industry nor what you do in life there's always a golden rule: Treat people with respect and build relationships. Younger generations don't understand this. Older generations pre technology were always personal relationships.
I'll be honest. I think Biden is well past his prime but that medicare and SS part of his speech was hilarious and the GOP members played right into Biden's trap. That actually was really well done.
Great speech overall but the most telling part was actually after the speech. Biden spent half an hour just walking the floor to chat with just about everyone. The man knows how to work the room and its arguably his biggest strength. In contrast, Obama was awful at this stuff so while he was personally very popular, there was tons of dissent within the caucus and unified acrimony among Republicans. Its really nice to have a president that understands the importance of strong working relationships (even with people you disagree with). Congress has become so used to adversarial relationships that Biden's approach to everything is both confusing and disarming for Republicans. Also, while everyone criticizes Biden's age, his other big advantage is that he's totally disconnected from social media due to his age. He doesn't get caught up in dumb culture war nonsense that floods social media. He just sticks to basic policy issues and sounds like a normal person. And as the Republicans keep leaning into more contrived and confusing culture war narratives, Biden comes across as the sane adult.
I got tied up with something last night and haven't watched the whole SOTU or the response. I did catch some clips this morning and did hear Sarah Huckabee Sanders say that Biden has surrendered to China and to a woke mob. Stuff like that plays to the base. If they are going to make it the centerpiece of the 2024 campaign I doubt it's a winning message.
Sen. Mike Lee said that Biden is lying about Republicans wanting to end Social Security yet there is a clip of Lee himself saying he wants to phase out Social Security. This was used in a campaign ad from the last election by his opponent Evan McMullin.
Oh come on, You love it when the hated government is paralyzed and can do nothing; better yet has few employees or tax revenues.and would be some libertarian paradise with every human interaction a market exchange.
They are in a losing situation. They have lost the independent vote in 2018, 2020, and 2022. So they need to find a way to win the independent vote in '24. But if they do that and the MAGA base crowd stays home because they feel like the party doesn't care about their issues they still lose. Somehow they have to find a balance to keep most of the MAGA crowd but also appeal to some more independents. SHS seems like she didn't find that balance at all in her response. We she mentioned a "woke mob" that won't win independents because people are aware there is no such thing as a woke mob. And certainly not one that has forced Biden to surrender.
Old Joe the conservative Democrat of 50 years ago is waking up. Probably Jan 06 or Bernie or the polls or something has gotten to him. It was a very good State of the Union. Much better than the flowery nothing burgers from Obama which became nearly unwatchable. It was good that he put he emphasis on the Repubs wanting to destroy Medicare and Social Security, which they start talking about whenever they get cocky. Of course the billionaires who really call the shots, and who provide the dark money for the candidates really want the money to go to Wall Street and 401 k's or whatever so they can take a cut.
I didn't think Biden had that in him. He played them on so many levels. Not only did he make it much harder for them to ever speak out against entitlement programs, he made them look really bad, and defined the face of the Republican party as this: I wonder how many suburban voters find this fur coat wearing drunken entitled sorority girl appealing?
