Former Vice President Mike Pence has been subpoenaed by the special counsel overseeing probes into former President Donald Trump, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

It's not immediately clear what information the subpoena from special counsel Jack Smith is seeking, but it follows months of negotiations between federal prosecutors and Pence's legal team.

Smith was appointed in November to oversee the investigation into Trump's potential mishandling of classified documents after leaving the presidency and obstructing the government's efforts to retrieve them -- as well as a separate probe into efforts by Trump and his allies to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

A spokesperson for Pence did not respond to a request for comment by ABC News. The special counsel's office also declined to comment.

Mark Meadows: Trump chief of staff subpoenaed by special counsel in Jan. 6 investigation

Donald Trump’s former chief of staff Mark Meadows has been subpoenaed by the special counsel investigating the former president and his role in the January 6, 2021, insurrection, a source familiar with the matter told CNN.

Special counsel Jack Smith’s office is seeking documents and testimony related to January 6, and Meadows received the subpoena sometime in January, the source said. An attorney for Meadows declined to comment.

The Justice Department did not respond to CNN’s request for comment on the subpoena.

The move to subpoena one of Trump’s most senior aides – in addition to the recent subpoena of former Vice President Mike Pence, as CNN reported last week – marks the latest significant step in the special counsel’s investigation into Trump’s role in seeking to overturn the outcome of the 2020 election.

I’ll take a bet now that like the Durham report, Twitter files, Hunters laptop etc. we’ll have nonstop teases of something big coming out that always is a commercial break away. Anything to keep you conspiracy theory folks on the edge of your seat.

McCarthy and basically any high ranking Republican in Congress has already had access to every shred of evidence in this case. We would have already seen it before the election in November if it existed.

Also I thought you guys “just want to move on” from January 6th.. now you want to dice in deeper again?? Which way is it?

41,000 hours is quite a bit of tape to cherry-pick enough footage to prove your preconceived erroneous conclusion.

I'm assuming others will get the same footage to conclude the actual facts...

It might not be 42,000 hours worth of footage but it’s pretty damn close and documentation for years.

If you can’t find anything here to poke a hole in the thesis of the case then your counter-narrative is on pretty weak footing.

It’s like you guys expect or are hoping to see in a corner somewhere a band of guys literally wearing FBI jackets and hats conversing with each other then switching into MAGA apparel, then filing up the crowd and assaulting officers etc. The fantasy you guys have just isn’t there. The only thing you are going to do is continue to remind the rest of the world that when Trump lost the election, he and his minions literally attempted a coup to try and overturn Democracy.

They should release all the tapes. I doubt it changes much. In any large chaotic event you can find things that don’t make sense. Generally though this is about the preponderance if evidence. From the massive amount of evidence we’ve seen already there is a preponderance of evidence that Jan 6 was exactly what it was and likely most of the newly released evidence will support that.
