Reminds me of "The Missing", which is a quality western (Tommy Lee Jones and Cate Blanchett). Has one of the most horrific scenes I've seen outside of Bone Tomahawk. "A Good Nurse" is solid, if you like true crime stuff, Chastain and Redmayne do good work. It's better if you don't know the story going in.
You People This was so disappointing. The writing is bad, the acting is one note, the dialogue is incessantly repetitive. Even though Eddie Murphy and Jonah Hill are in it, I wasn't excited by the trailer but I should've known this was going to suck when I found out the guy that wrote and directed Blackish wrote and directed this movie. There are some laughs but most of the humor in this movie is cringe humor. This a complete waste of a very talented cast. 3.6 / 10
The Pale Blue Eye 4/10 Serviceable first half, good acting and creepy tone, but it takes an abrupt downhill turn as the plot grinds along -- gets fully ridiculous and cringey by the end. Like, I went from feeling frustrated with the writers to feeling sorry for them. "Oh... Oh no... bless your hearts." The actor who plays Poe does a nice job though. Holds the screen ably with Bale. Duvall wasted in an absurd, bit role. Too bad.
The Devil Below Premise was solid and opening scene with Will Patton was a good hook, but when I saw the cliched cave explorer cast of Tomb Raider Chick, Handsome Young Rouge British Intellectual, Scared Guy, Religious Guy and Security Guy I knew this movie was doomed. Alicia Sanz was nice eye candy but not believable at all as a tough for-hire adventure leader. The subterranean monsters are extremely low rent and you never really get a clear view of them. Script was pretty flat and dialogue was terirble. Sound and cinematography were good, though. 2/10. Skip it.
absurdist dark comedy double feature night last night. watched The Menu, didn't think it was quite as good as I'd been led to believe, then followed it up with The Lobster. Together this was a terrific pairing. I think I may have been influenced just a bit too much by reviews suggesting The Menu was a remake of The Most Dangerous Game, so I kept expecting them to serve up one of the guests that had been sacrificed. Just couldn't let go of that expectation. I'd put both of them around an 8 or an 8.5 out of 10. Colin Farrell continues to amaze me.
lot better than it sounds. give it a try! watched the Netflix war film Narvik about the Norwegian battles of Narvik in 1940. Norwegian film, well-done, if a bit slow paced. Didn't know anything about the battles, learned a lot. 7/10
Seems to be some hot debate on which film is worse...."Shotgun Wedding" or "You People". Well...at least I was able to sit all the way through "You People". I can't say the same for the former...which I think was awful in every way imaginable and was unwatchable.
Had never seen In Bruges. Fantastic film, Gleeson and Farrell are terrific in it, I now understand the acclaim. Hard to believe this was Martin McDonagh's first film. 9/10
rewatched Peter Weir's The Way Back, which I hadn't seen in years. It held up very well to re-viewing. 8/10
That's the escape and walk from the Gulag movie? Not to be confused with The Way Way Back...which is great but just a bit more lighthearted.
yep with Ed Harris and others. I thought it would drag a second time around at 2.5 hours but it really held my attention. there's another movie somewhere along the line that I watched about a female prisoner (professor?) who went to a gulag and fell in love there/was released. Can't find it but remember having enjoyed that one. If I figure it out I'll post the title
I saw the "A Christmas Story Christmas"...the sequel to "A Christmas Story"...recently having been a big fan of the original. I wasn't expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised. It can't touch the original but the narration and story worked. It was more of a grown-up movie than a kid movie this time around. I could actually really relate to a few things from the film that were awfully familiar to my personal family experiences. Ralphie still had it imo and the actor did an admirable job reviving the character. They incorporated Ralphie's supporting friends (with original actors) in a good way with a flashback for each to remind us who the characters were. They paid tribute to the Dad really well. Missed my movie Mom, though. The replacement actress (from "Airplane") did okay but it wasn't a big part. I would watch again if it is on TV on a back-to-back with the original during X-mas. I'd probably give it a 7.5 out of 10. I could tell they really put a lot of thought into what they were doing while paying homage to the original. I couldn't really ask for more than that.
watched Munich:The Edge of War on Netflix. Dragged a little but okay overall, a bit of a spy fantasy and "what if" about Hitler, Chamberlain, and the Munich Agreement. Actually pretty good about Chamberlain, played by Jeremy Irons, the rest of it's a little far-fetched. Worth watching but maybe only a 6/10 as films go.
Watched Vengeance by BJ Novak over the weekend. 6.5/10. Starts okay and has a few funny stereotypical Texan slants but just kind of trails off and loses its way.
I just did the same at your recommendation...stopped one paragraph in so I can watch it later lol I knew it was "weird" and had something to do with falling in love... did not know those other details
Yeah, I’m kind of tired of stereotypical black plot in comedy movies and the whole turning everything a non-black person says into “that’s racist” or even “what’s that’s supposed to mean?” Eddie Murphy was terrible, absolutely horrific. Nia was forgettable. Both poorly written and directed as well most likely. The n-word bombs were out of place. Julia Louis-Dreyfus was poorly written too, but her delivery was cringe. The whole Arab angle also fell flat, unconvincing. The Jews vs Blacks conversation was just odd and Jonah’s parents forced liking black stuff was just insulting to comedy. How did this script get past concept stage is beyond me. And with all Eddie passes up, why the **** did he accept this?! I’d give it a 1/10 because these are quality actors and they couldn’t even bring it up to a decent level. Jonah was solid here and there. The Yum Kippur stuff was the best part and actually funny.
