I've always thought it would be a testament to how good you are if you can have more home runs than strikeouts in a season.

Do you guys know if this has ever been done?

I mean there are guys who never strike out, like Nomar (the baseball player). But he doesn't hit enough homers. So his best season maybe he had a 3:5 HR:K ratio.

Then there are guys who homer a lot, but also K a lot. Like Thome, Griffey, Sosa, etc.

I looked and as of right now, Barry Bonds has more homers than Ks. Albert Pujols does too.

Do you think this can be sustained?

Bonds without a doubt will finish the season with more home runs than strikeouts, maybe this is also because he has more intentional walks than hits this year.

Ted Williams and Joe Dimaggio did it a few times and I believe others from that era did as well.

    You're right, Ted Williams 1941. 27 K, 37 HR, and 147 BB.

why don't people put up those kind of stats anymore? ;)

The first name that came to my mind was Hall of Famer, Joe Sewell who was an infielder that played with the Yankees and Indians in the 1920's.

In 1929, he had 578 ABs and struck out only 4 times!  He also hit 7 homers that season.

His best season, home run wise, was 1932 when he hit a "Ruthian-Like" (for him) 11 homers. Oh and he only struck out 3 times in 503 ABs.

All in all, he played 1903 total games, had 7132 at-bats, hit 49 homers, struck out a grand total of 114 times, and finished with a lifetime batting average of .312. He also finished with a remarkable OBP of .391!!

I know that there were others that had low strikeout totals that played back then, but Sewell was the most obvious.

George Brett did it, too, I think. But I don't follow baseball, so I may be wrong about that - I think I remember them talking about it. :)

I seemed to recall that DiMaggio's career ratio was close to 1:1, so I went ahead and looked it up (these numbers are truly impressive): he homered more than he struck out in 7 of his 13 seasons; never did he strike out more than 39 times in a year; in 1941 he hit 30 HRs and struck out 13 times. His career totals are 361 homeruns, 369 strikeouts.

They didn't take drug-enhancing drugs like Bonds or McGuire...

I think Babe Ruth holds the record for most strikeouts in a season... but look at the other records he holds... eh?

By the way, check out BONDS: http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/s...e=1&sortByStat=SO&timeFrame=3&timeSubFrame2=4 I know, I know... B Bonds the father... 1970

Seriously, DiMaggio just went up on my favorite players list. Mays is still at the top though.
