I think some of the people here need to stick to Milli Vanilli and other lip-synch artists for the sake of being offended.
You miss the point. There were about 10,000 other people who would have rather listened to them play instead of hearing their politics. Again, there was no violence, destruction of property, etc... Had it been a 58 year old women on stage my mind would not have slipped into attack mode. Throwing a tantrum because someone has an opinion that you do not support is never the answer.
i'm not arguing that at all. with the facts that have been presented, it appears the crowd grossly overreacted. but i do think there is a sense of weariness with politics mixed in with our entertainment. i'm certainly weary of it, on both sides.
but not a realistic answer. Performance art covers the poitical spectrum. Ever gone to a liberal bashing Dennis Miller concert? Liberals buying a Dennis Miller ticket should not be surprised with the political content in his performance. Likewise, conservatives should not be surprised if Rondstadt goes liberal on them during her performance. Reality check. Rondstadt sings for two hours in her concert and spends less than a minute talking about Moore. One has to wonder why some people have zero tolerance wrt political attacks on the current president. The thing I found disturbing about this article was Hundreds of angry fans streamed from the theater as Ronstadt sang. Some of them reportedly defaced posters of her in the lobby, writing comments and tossing drinks on her pictures. The politics of hate does not reflect America at its best.
but seriously, that's all we get now. us against them. if you don't agree with someone, they're inherently evil. we throw out comparisons to hitler. we saw that from the right when clinton was in office..we're seeing it from the left now that w. is in the office. it's a joke.
No, I understood your point but I think you chose poorly in your example of modern musicians. Rage is INHERENTLY political as most of the lyrics were driven by Zack's politics. Their music was kick ass and I agreed with Zack politically a lot of times.
And you'll feel the same way when the professional protesters do their thing at the GOP Convention, right?
I guess some of those audience members (and BBS members) heads would have exploded if they had ever attended a Lou Reed concert. We're talking major-league diatribes.
I'm so loving this irony! "This is an election year, and I think we're in desperate trouble and it's time for people to speak up and not pipe down. It's a real conflict for me when I go to a concert and find out somebody in the audience is a Republican or fundamental Christian. It can cloud my enjoyment. I'd rather not know." -- Linda Rondstadt http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20040715/news_lz1w15linda.html someone in the audience?? geez.
I saw that quote. You know, I was actually feeling sorry for Linda Ronstadt until I read that. For someone who considers herself liberal, that's an extremely close-minded view. If I heard some celebrity make a remark like that, I would definitely boycott their work.
that's pretty f'in pathetic... to all you liberals who argued earlier in the thread that an entertainer's political viewpoints should not matter to a fan, what do you think of ronstadt's feeling that her fans' viewpoints do affect her? sad...
I find it very telling that you are unable to discern the difference between a politician and an entertainer.
I disagree with Rondstadt as much as I disagree with those who trash her for dedicating a song to someone.
Why would she dedicate this song to Michael Moore? Desperado, why don't you come to your senses? You been out ridin' fences for so long now. Oh, you're a hard one, But I know that you've got your reasons. These things that are pleasin' you, Can hurt you somehow. Don't you draw the queen of diamonds, boy, She'll beat you if she's able. Know the queen of hearts is always your best bet. Now it seems to me, some fine things, Have been laid upon your table. But you only want the things that you can't get. Desperado, oh, you ain't gettin' no younger: Your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home. And freedom, oh freedom, Well, that's just some people talkin' Your prison is walking, Through this world all alone. And don't your feet get cold in the winter time? The sky won't snow, the sun won't shine It's hard to tell the night time from the day You're loosin' all your highs and lows Ain't it funny how the feeling, Goes away? Desperado, why don't you come to your senses? Come down from your fences, and open the gate It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you, You better let somebody love you, You better let somebody love you, You better let somebody love you, Before it's too late.
