    You guys are both nuts.

Kristol wants nothing to do with Trump, still. He is not getting behind Trump no matter what and is firmly in the camp that believes Clinton is likely to win the presidency (and that's probably the better option) but wants to make sure conservatives have someone to turn out for in order to vote down ballot. He has flat out said he will not vote for Donald Trump no matter what.

Traditional conservatives (limited government) *should* be for government getting out of the control of such things. They are morality impositions. It is pretty much impossible to make a case that weed should be illegal and alcohol legal on any objective terms. It is a social perception more than anythng else..the government infringing on individual freedoms to impose others morality on them. Something *traditional* conservatives should not be for.

Not that I'm a big weed proponent, but this issue is typical of where the Republican party has moved away from traditional convervatism and into social conservatism. That pendulum appears to be swinging back.

John McAfee (yes, that McAfee); candidate for president and...Hagrid

These guys are all still loons. Poor Gary Johnson.

What are you talking about? Name me a prominent political conservative that wasn't about controlling what happens in someone's home.

American politicians so bad, Con Bill Kristol looking for French to save us

Two Republicans intimately familiar with Bill Kristol’s efforts to recruit an independent presidential candidate to challenge Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have told Bloomberg Politics that the person Kristol has in mind is David French -- whose name the editor of the Weekly Standard floated in the current issue of the magazine.

French is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. According to the website of National Review, where French is a staff writer, he is a constitutional lawyer, a recipient of the Bronze Star, and an author of several books who lives in Columbia, Tenn., with his wife Nancy and three children.

Reached in Israel late Tuesday afternoon, Kristol declined to comment on his efforts to induce French to run. The two Republicans confirmed that French is open to launching a bid, but that he has not made a final decision. One of the Republicans added that French has not lined up a vice-presidential running mate or significant financial support. However, according to this person, some conservative donors look favorably on the prospect of French entering the fray.

In Kristol’s piece in the Standard’s June 6 issue, he argued that “the fact of Trump's and Clinton's unfitness for the Oval Office has become so self-evident that it's no longer clear one needs a famous figure to provide an alternative.” After mentioning Mitt Romney and other possibilities such as Judd Gregg and Mel Martinez, Kristol invoked French’s name and résumé, writing, “To say that he would be a better and a more responsible president than Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump is to state a truth that would become self-evident as more Americans got to know him.”

    ...

Speculation had centered on 2012 Republican nominee Romney, freshman Nebraska senator Ben Sasse, and other current and former state and federal office-holders.

According to one person deeply involved in the efforts to recruit an independent challenger, the search has focused on individuals who have one or more of the following three traits seen as vital for credibly such a bid: fame, vast wealth, and elective experience. Reached by phone Tuesday evening, French declined to answer questions about any possible run.

In 2012, it was the first time a Libertarian candidate received more than 1,000,000 votes. I'd be willing to bet that they get a significant bump up from that this November. Of course he's not going to win a state. But the numbers will be enough to grab attention.

While I don't agree with their platform and I think it's become the place for the extreme right to go, it is something worth paying attention to over the next 5 months.

Let see, legacy conservative commentator-jackass who is not particularly popular and who is generally wrong about everything, yet still somehow paid to give his opinion, and whose most notable achievement in public life was to have helped inflict SarahPalin upon us, is going to unilaterally anoint a random anoymous right wing blogger/functionary whom nobody knows about with no record at all to be President.

Sounds very, very likely to happen.

I'm looking at the boat you're in, but haven't left the dock. The Libertarian party feels like a natural home for younger, fiscally conservative voters. The GOP's continued insistence on pairing itself with social conservatives will not pay dividends down the road. My generation does not care if men are marrying men. Many don't believe that recreational mar1juana use is an inherently moral evil. We don't want the Bible being treated as a scientific refutation in public schools. Basically, fiscally responsible millennials don't have a home in the modern GOP and the Libertarian party could welcome them.

I don't believe in Libertarianism as a functioning ideology, but I can see how the GOP's refusal to kick social conservatives from its coalition could help the third party.
