well he could look at it a different way even if its highly unlikely. He'll make 11 million this year then the Warriors are gonna let him go, and at 34 and with his problems i doubt he gets a good contract. If a team comes in and offers him the mid level exception over two years, he'll still receive the same amount just spread out over 2 years. Of course though it wouldn't happen
Do we know for sure yet if the final year of Van Exel's contract is a team option or a player option?
Its definitely a player option. I'm just not 100% sure what the deadline is for him opting out. I'm going with August 3rd b/c that was the date that his contract was originally signed, and I think that's how the deadlines are normally determined.
This offseason he holds a players option. Here is a quote from the Contra Costa Times back in Feb 04 "He has an option for next season that would pay him $11.8 million. "After next season, I want to play for a team in Texas," said Van Exel." after this season the team holds the option and obviously won't pick it up.
Another source regarding the player option from espn.com: NVE in Texas Van Exel thus has only one season of guaranteed money left on his contract after this season. He has an option to terminate the contract this summer and become a free agent but admits that he probably can't afford to opt out, saying, "I gave up a lot of money already."
NVE days are done. Rox lose nothing by losing him. He's just one less player CD has to consider whether to overpay or not.
I agree. This trade also means that Dampier is probably available, though it's a safe bet that GS has no interest in our 3rd or 4th best players. I mean really, who does.
NVE Last year is not guaranteed. He changed the option for Cuban in order for the trade for NVE to GS to be completed. Look at the espn insider. Chad Ford has a new article about free agents. The blurb is at the bottom of the page.
There has been talk of Shareef Abdur-Rahim being moved to New Jersey. There is also suspicion that Kidd is going to request to be traded. I wonder if Portland is going to move SAR and Stoudamire to New Jersey for Kidd and few more players.
It's official, according to ESPN: Salary Swap: Davis, Dickau Dealt to Warriors The Golden State Warriors traded Nick Van Exel to the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday for veteran center Dale Davis and backup guard Dan Dickau, a league source told ESPN Insider Chad Ford. The Oregonian reported Tuesday that Dickau told the newspaper he had been traded. Blazers general manager John Nash would not comment when reached by the paper. The trade is essentially a salary swap by both teams; Van Exel and Davis are in the last year of their deals. The Warriors no longer needed Van Exel now that they've signed guard Derek Fisher. However, they did need another veteran center to back up Adonal Foyle with free agent Erick Dampier likely leaving the team through free agency. Dampier is expected to agree to a sign-and-trade deal with the Knicks this week. The deal doesn't make as much sense for the Blazers. They have Damon Stoudamire at the point along with lottery pick Sebastian Telfair. Telfair's played so-so in the Rocky Mountain Revue summer league and may have prompted the Blazers to look for more immediate depth at the position. While the deal shores up their back court, it hampers their front court to a certain extent. Theo Ratliff is the starter, but he has a history of injuries. His only real back-up now is Vladimir Stepania. Van Exel has a $12.7 million team option on his contract next season. It's unlikely that the Blazers will pick up the team option. Link
