I think he's protecting his reputation after realizing he's in over his head at this point. The guy is literally a first year OC, and now all of a sudden he knows how to lead an entire locker room?? It was always ambitious for him to seek out a HC gig after just one year, and I think he's smart enough to realize he will do more long term damage to himself if he bites off more than he can chew right now.

I would be down to draft Levis or Richardson and have them sit if Payton and Brady came along. Otherwise. Gimme Young.

Payton is a half of fame level coach.

He is absolutely worth the #12 pick, but hopefully it doesn't cost that much.

Was Payton's success because he was a great coach... or because he had a Hall of Fame quarterback in Drew Brees for many years? A question to debate.

The asking price is a 1st round pick which all the suitors will have come 2024.

The Panthers doesn’t make a lot of sense unless they are really willing to pay a premium. But at the same time, it’s in Payton’s best interest that his team give up the least possible for him.

If Payton is the guy, I’d be ok with either Levis or Richardson as well. We seen what he did with Jamies and Teddy B so imagine if he was able to groom a guy from the start of his career.

I’m not ok with Brady but I’d take Jimmy G instead. Have him start for a year or two (ala Alex Smith) while they get ready and by then, the roster should be seriously ready to compete.

Does their owner appear to be incompetent?

I was being a little facetious.. I don’t really care to have Brady in the waning years of his career. He is finally at least at the point where he can’t overcome bad coaching, he’s in the decline. I just meant if that was something Payton wanted to do then we could get a qb that needs to wait a year, and behind Brady that isn’t bad at all. But just Payton coming I still want Bryce young.. I see too much trubisky/Zach Wilson/raw Josh Allen in Richardson/Levis.. not enough current Allen/Mahomes. I don’t wanna take that risk. Gimme the guy that’s “too small” with elite mental processing and anticipation. You can do great things with that.

Yeah yeah I knew what you meant but I was just saying I’d rather Jimmy G. I wouldn’t have a problem with that. I don’t want the Texans to become like the Rockets where they don’t have any vets/leaders and the young guys we expect to be our future begin to get comfortable losing.

Fun fact: Keenan McCardell is from Houston. He went to Waltrip.

But this is BOBs job to lose. This has been rumored for months.

I don’t know. I don’t want to hurt Cal or anyone over in the front office with this thing called critical thinking.

Oh absolutely - he's not just picking to be an OC for the hell of it. But he could legitimately have decided it was his best strategy for now for his long-term career. I just don't think it necessarily means his interviews went badly or that he couldn't get a job.

Someone else reported his meeting with Houston was virtual and didn't last long. Seems he's more interested in Carolina.

I believe that every one of our meetings in this first round of interviews has been virtual.
