Germany even more dramatic, hitting >30%. This is why "competition" doesn't matter, the adoption curve will lift all boats. But yes Tesla #1 seller in UK and Germany.

price wars in china. who will survive .....

SHANGHAI, Jan 10 (Reuters) - China's passenger car sales rose 2.4% in December as consumers rushed to make use of a subsidy for electric vehicles (EV) before they expired last month, with sales likely to sharply weaken in January, an auto industry body said on Tuesday.

Tesla saw its December sales in China plunge 41% from a year earlier despite offering deep discounts.

Tesla was on track for a massive q4 in China are oct/Nov and then December came in about -50% what it was supposed to. Tesla China still eeked out a record in q4 but I'm still trying to figure out what happened so suddenly. It's not competition, because we would have seen deterioration over months and quarters, not just out of the blue in December. The easy answer is massive covid outbreaks there but most of the other EV makers did not get impacted like Tesla. It could be that Shanghai was disproportionately impacted by covid and that's where tesla factory is located.

In any case, the price war is only coming from Tesla who cut by ~10%. Most of the other ev makers are raising prices after losing the government subsidy. The survivors will be BYD since they have the lowest price ev, and Tesla who has the highest profit margin (most room to cut prices). Most at risk is xpev. Nio also warned of a soft first half 2023 so they are not immune.

So an average of about 55 mph? A good number of EVs could make that trip in that time and do it much, much cheaper.

You'd also benefit from no tail-pipe emissions, you don't give money to Big Oil, there's less vibration in the cabin which can reduce your fatigue, and less noise in the cabin which means the audio sounds better and doesn't have to be turned up as loud.

Additionally, one-pedal drive makes driving in stop-and-go traffic much easier and saves your brakes.

Tesla has a huge head start in the market, but unless they really step up their game I think the major car makers are gonna blow past them within a decade once their reputation as "the" electric car to buy starts to fade and they have to win buyers on merit alone.

A lot of cracks have been showing over the last few years as they've tried to scale up production, and that was before Musk starting making an ass of himself, going against the very base most likely to buy his product.

Yup - history is full of companies that stopped innovating and were overtaken despite being dominant early on - see Nokia and Blackberry..or search engines before Google... They still have the charging network and the early lead - but neither is insurmountable - they have to start building out the interiors to match the price point....the truck will be the interesting milestone - how does the consumer market react once they get their hands on it, etc. Will the interior just be the S/Y/X on a truck or will they start upping their game vs the F150, etc.

I don't know enough about the commercial truck side to comment there.

Who is at fault? Just curious.

I just saw this on the news day. Then I bought a computer, signed up for clutchfans and posted it here because I know you elonstans will come to defend anything. Glad to see it worked.

Especially tech. You never know what the general consumers will end up buying 10 years from now. This stuff is in its infancy and marketshares come and go.

Head start is not a guarantee.

    1) What does he mean by FSD was announced?? When? It is still in Beta.

    2) Even in Beta, you are required to be attentive at all times and be ready to take control because of situations exactly like this one.

The reality is that its marketed as "Full Self Driving" so while drivers should be attentive, many times they aren't simply due to how the product is marketed. Tesla's problem is that FSD wasn't originally shipped with driver monitoring cameras so its missing a crucial safety feature. Also, in general the FSD UX leaves a lot to be desired when compared to something like GM's supercruise. I just find some of the competition to have a much more polished UX even if FSD is more versatile and built out. But I'm probably biased because I really just don't like Tesla's UX in general.

I personally have driven a Tesla and gotten a phantom stop on a highway while on FSD. I was paying attention so I was able to recover but it is jarring when it happens. Tesla also quietly announced that its going to start building cars with radar again which I suspect is a solution for the phantom stop issue (among other things).

Things will get better for Tesla but I think its fair to acknowledge that they've made mistakes with FSD.
