https://www.espn.com/nba/insider/st...23-resetting-race-no-1-pick-victor-wembanyama A good article on the team's chasing the number 1 pick....Wemby. The favorites 1. Houston Rockets (10-30) NBA Draft: Victor Wembanyama All eyes are on 7-foot-4 French prospect Victor Wembanyama, the 2023 projected top pick. We'll have complete coverage leading up to the June 22 draft on ESPN. Sadly, veteran guard Eric Gordon's lament that "there's been no improvement" by the Rockets over the course of the season seems accurate. Houston's .250 winning percentage is barely ahead of last season's 20-win pace despite another year of development for the team's young core and the addition of No. 3 pick Jabari Smith Jr. On the plus side, with the Rockets' 2024 pick headed to Oklahoma City unless it lands in the top four, this is the year for Houston to add another top draft pick to the puzzle. Jack Nicholson Yes.gif Team needs to be pursuing all avenues to get the highest talent level possible. This year, that's tanking, since it surely won't be development.
It’s a very simple strategy to add top level talent, apparently overlooked by the folks freaking out about our awful record.
They decided to play the odds, at least they’ve stuck with the strategy and didn’t lose their nerve. I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, we will know in a year or two.
I was somehow unaware of this. That's a very strong, perhaps irresistible, incentive for the Rockets to tank.
True. It’s not as easy as football where there is no lottery and all you have to do is not win a meaningless game at the end of a season. The strategy is almost foolproof in football or so we thought…. Gotta love Houston sports
Bingo! They are sacrificing a year of development for the young guys to incompetent coaching for a shot at Wemby. Even with a competent coaching staff the team would still be in the lottery with just a few percentage points less chance at Wemby while still developing the kids for the future. I just hope this works because stunting the growth will be a complete waste and set us back another year not to mention that bad habits can sometimes be very hard to "unlearn".
Bracing myself for the ‘Top 4 pick or bust 2.0’ thread next season, after missing out on Wemby/Scoot.
