An assistant coach is interviewed at halftime of every game on the Rockets TV network. Other than Lucas, I have not been impressed by their level of intensity or coaching acumen. If the Rockets make a coaching change next year or whenever, hope they do a thorough evaluation of the entire staff and not just use Silas as a scapegoat.

I like Lucas, but I think the new coach should be allowed to bring in his own staff.

This culture of having the front office pick the staff does no one any favors. It repels coaching candidates and the next thing you know your video coordinator is an assistant coach.

Most of the assistants are Silas guys (guys he brought in this season when he was finally allowed to make his own assistant coaching staff), so I'd imagine most of those guys will be gone next year, since Silas will be gone by then too. The only ones who aren't Silas hires are Lucas and Abdulfattah, I think. I'd imagine Lucas will be back, unless he just retires or something.

I didn't mind it when Morey did it with McHale because he was such an unproven weirdo, but I do agree that hiring a head coach is in most cases hiring a UNIT. Adelman was a good example. With his team they were able to hit the ground running in training camp, everyone had their roles, and it was a very smooth process for coaching. They all knew exactly what Rick needed, and their roles, and they had worked with each other for years.

Assuming Silas is gone this season or the Summer, I think these kids definitely need not just an experienced and fundamentally sound NBA coach, but they definitely need a coaching UNIT like the Adelman crew and not just piece mailed with a few guys in the ranks that Stone likes, or has a new analytics model he wants to test out, etc. I trusted Morey to make those kind of calls.... I do NOT trust Stone at this point. He has not earned that trust yet and doesn't have that kind of credibility to dictate that with a veteran NBA head coach.

The issue isn't the assistant coaching staff.

The staff doesn't decide what style of play will be utilized or what the organizational philosophy will be. They also do not decide what the focus of a players development.

The issue is higher up - ownership, the front office and the head coach.

There were several Rockets assistants last year that privately to the front office and to Silas shared their concerns with the direction and philosophy of the team - and they were let go.

apparently Patrick was a big force driving the Westbrook trade, so he’s already made a contribution. Perhaps he also wants to take some credit for the current direction of the team since he’s a big part of the front office now ;)

You’re basing your analysis of these assistants on 30 second TV interviews? o_O

Does intensity during a 20-second TV interview mean anything at all?

Firing all the coaching staff without firing the coach is such an NFL /NCAA Football type of thing to do

Normally, what you are saying is absolutely correct. Problem with Silas is that he comes accross as the type who needs top notch assistants to carry him. If this organization decides to keep Silas (and all indications are that he’ll be here again next year). then we need much better assistants than we have. Some of those guys on his staff look like their interns for the job. My guess is that those are the people really running the show behind the scenes.

Let’s be clear….that is not the solution that’s needed. Rockets ownership doesn’t care and is cheap, so they will forego a “coaching search” and instead promote one of the assistants (who they picked anyhow) to be the next head coach. That is not the solution to our problem!!!

Yes, it absolutely does. A guy who looks like an intern for the job smiling and saying “we’re not playing bad and we just need to recapture the magic we had at the beginning of the game” doesn’t give me comfort for a win after we just blew a 20 point lead.

The assistant coaches do what the head coach and GM tell them to.

So, when it comes to style of play, rotations and philosophy - that is decided by Silas and Stone.

So it's less about whether or not he/she is a good coach and more about whether they make you comfortable. :D

I'm not in love with our coaching staff by any means, but I personally think personality during interviews means squat.

How can you tell what kind of intensity or coaching acumen from the TV, what are you basing this evaluation on?
