Carlos Correa to the Twins - 3 Years, $105 Million

It won't happen.. but Correa could easily fit this team at 3B if they're committed to Yordan in LF. Altuve could then DH. And Bregman could move to 2B. And when Brantley plays, one of the Altuve-Bregman-Correa-Yordan core gets a day off. (and we know they're going to use virtually a different lineup/give rest to somebody, almost every game this season... as they did last season and the year before).

Whether Pena's late-season adjustments lead to sustained success will be a big question to start 2023. I'm confident he's going to figure it out, but also cautious to exponentially raise expectations simply based on his great post-season.

 

Yes. There are 500 PA available to him but that's about the only thing that makes it any kind of fit at all.

Altuve can only play 2B and DH.

If Bregman is the primary 2B then Altuve needs to be the primary DH

If Altuve is the primary DH then Yordan must be the primary LF.

Brantley has an incentive laden contract and will want to play at least 65% (105g) of the games but suddenly has no position.

Bregman is playing for his "Big" FA deal in 2 years he's not going to be happy moving to 2B or becoming a utility player

The reasons this would be a bad idea are many and various.

DH: Altuve 102, Brantley 40, Yordan 20
LF: Alvarez 130, Brantley 32.
1B: Abreu 150, Correa 12
2B: Bregman 114, Altuve 48
3B: Correa 126, Bregman 36
SS: Pena 150, Correa 12

And that's based on 150 g per player. Most if them will want more than that, say 153-158

Short of injury there are not enough games for Brantley if Correa is signed.

Brantley won't make a fuss but it's a bad message to sign a guy to a contract with incentives and then bring in someone else to take away his plate appearances.

 

Maybe Brantley learns first? Maybe Brantley isn't all the way recovered from his shoulder (which we won't know till March anyways) and needs more time?

The point is, in this hypothetical world of the current Astros roster and Correa... that they could/would be able to accommodate him if he somehow ended up here.

There's also zero chance that Abreu-Alvarez-Bregman-Correa-Pena-Altuve all play 150+ games next year.

 

Any of them could play LF adequately. Altuve currently has the speed for CF but his arm renders him a non-option and even if his arm was better I don’t think he would track balls or get jumps all that well, and his speed will likely diminish in the medium if not short term.

If Bregman hadn’t had hammy issues I would say he’d be an option.

I’d think Peña could play an above average Cf for a while. I think Correa could be below average but playable. Bregman would be a disaster and Altuve would be Biggio like.

 

Sign Correa and convert Pena to CF problem solved.
