Because Cuban and his front office are bunch of idiots.

When they drafted him, Dallas constructed his contract in such a way that Brunson would end up an unrestricted free agent after his rookie contract. That was the first blunder.

2nd blunder was not offering him a 4y/55M extension he wanted and was on the table even last february. Mavericks doubted he could be a building block next to Luka because of his disappearance in last Clippers series. TBF, Carlisle was using him as a scorer first and creator second, which was a mistake IMO.

Then came Kidd and inserted him into starting lineup after THJ injury. Brunson was correctly used as a secondary ball handler next to Luka and after february extension deadline passed, he blossomed and made Dallas regret passing on his extension. Then came playoffs and his outburst againt Utah without Luka. He was crucial as a 2ndary playmaker against Utah and Phoenix, and held his own on defense.

After playoffs, Cuban confidently and, I'll add a bit arrogantly, said Dallas can offer him the most money and he will stay a Maverick. But Dallas didn't count on Knicks being able to free up a lot of cap space so easily, which they did mostly with help of Detroit. They also hired his father as an assistant coach plus some Knicks' front office guys have lots of ties to Brunson family. And Brunson wanted to be a Knick.

If Dallas offered Brunson 4y/55m despite his blunder in the playoffs against Clippers, they would have one of the best contracts in the league right now. Losing him for nothing is a catastrophe for a team that doesn't know how to draft and was lucky three teams passed on Luka.

This almost feels like Harden and the Rockets losing Parsons, except the result of their play is completely different. This Mavs team does remind me a bit of the Harden Rockets, they may not ever have enough, unless Luka really steps it up a notch. A bit of karma for that franchise is nice.

Hindsight is 20/20. Nobody was declaring off the top of their lungs Knicks got a superstar when they signed Brunson.

They could extend him for 4/55 in January 2022. Everyone expected Dallas to do so. If he doesn't pan out, he can still be traded later. No hindsight needed there.

I mean Randle is averaging more points per possession with a higher TS and EFG, he's also way more physically imposing at his size to be able to get his own shot off against a defense.

The argument for Brunson is that he's not too far behind Randle as a scorer, while being a much better passer.

Julius Randle shoots 27% from the field and 23% from 3 in the clutch…Brunson 47% from the field and 39% from 3

should have easily been the knicks representative over Randle. Brunson is definitely having an all star season and is an all star

Nah KPJ would need to grow a brain first, but you have fun waiting for that to happen.
