Why gross? Genuinely wanting to know? I thought he was a big part of the culture built in gsw and yah Kerr needed to unlock the offense but he can get somebody to join him for that
Because Houston is already associated with enough religious weirdos. Kerr "unlocked the offense" by running an offense instead of a church service. I'll accept Kerr as our coach for sure. Mark Jackson couldn't win with the foundation of one of the NBA's greatest dynasties.
I'm not a huge fan of Mark Jackson by any means but that is a bit of a over simplified summary of his time is gsw. He had 3 years there, the first of which Stephen played 26 games and it was klays rookie year and no Draymond yet. Year 2 they made a significant improvement with steph being relatively healthy is his 4th year, Klays second and draymonds rookie year. While the team remained sort for stagnant on offense, hovering in the top 10 (which I acknowledged ), defensively they went from like 28th to 10th in his 3 years. So I would say he only had 2 years with the core and klay/draymond were just starting out in those years. Everyone expected the warriors to take a huge leap even if Jackson had coached them in 2014 though Kerr did a better job. Reason I threw his name out is bc rockets are in a similar boat, young team that needs a strong leader capable of working with young players.
I didn't say prime dynasty Warriors I said foundation. What does it say that the expectation was "huge leap" and he got fired for a better coach? Silas is our Mark Jackson. We need our Steve Kerr.
great list. mine is pretty similar. Tier 1: Snyder, Vogel, JVG - probably can't attract or afford them. Snyder great development coach and winner, Vogel championship defensive coach, JVG I like what he's been doing with team USA winning with college kids. Tier 2: Atkinson, Stotts, Sampson - more attainable. Atkinson proven player development, stotts proven regular season winner could help us get to the play-in or playoffs, Sampson could do a little of both if he wants to leave for the NBA again. Tier 3: Abdelfettah, Hollins, Chris Quinn, Charles Lee - most likely (affordable) options. abdelfettah is supposed to have some new ideas, Hollins might just be better served running the defense at this stage of his career, Chris Quinn is Spo's top guy and did well in HC interviews last summer. Lee is Bud's top guy and he's had some good coaches branch off from his tree.
Agree to disagree. I think the foundation was set for Kerr. Year before he took over they won 50 games and with Kerr they continued their ascend to 60 games. To use your analogy, Silas is not mark Jackson, he is Keith smart
Here is one out of the left field kelvin Sampson. Snyder would be ok as well. He developed Mitchell into a star and can do the same for green
Please don’t ask me how, but I know from someone within the organization that Abdelfettah is responsible for all the playing time Nix has been getting. If you’re looking for change in the right direction time to look elsewhere. Anyone from the top two tiers would be a MASSIVE improvement to the existing staff.
Only existing staffer worth a dime is Lucas. Harden wanted him as head coach so that’s a plus as well when recruiting him in the offseason.
Lionel Hollins is 70 years old. If he is “the guy”, he won’t be for very long. Also if the Rockets know they want Hollins to be their long term coach, they are dumb to not just fire Silas and give Hollins the job.
It is impossible to know who the next coach will be, because it will depend on how secure Stone is. Stone is thin skinned, he isn’t going to bring in a big name coach that can usurp power from Stone. He will want a head coach that lacks influence with ownership and won’t go over his head. The only exception is if ownership comes in and insists on a big name and Stone has no choice. The last thing Stone wants is someone like JVG or Carlisle to come in and tell Tilman that Stone has screwed up some things. Stone will want to be able to blame it all on Silas. My guess is Stone will target someone from outside the organization that tells Stone what he wants to hear and will bond with Stone. There is no way to know if the rebuild will or will not work, but I can say the Rockets are at best, middle of the pack when it comes to the overall organization right now. They lack an institutional culture, they lack really strong leadership in the front office, they lack a strong head coach and they lack a cohesive philosophy. They still have a good analytics department and they have somewhat improved their scouting.
Rockets cant afford to lose Mahmoud Abdul Fattah. Look at what Nick Nurse Accomplished since being a Head Coach, Former Vipers Head Coach. The Raptors won a Championship and being a Playoff regardless of losing Star Players
Good point, but everyone is interim at this point. Good scheme gets trumped by lack of experience by players. Everything on paper or white board looks great.....but do the players have enough muscle memory or repetition to execute competently? Only coach I would take right now is K Sampson. Goes with player preference and Tilman price range. People keep saying Mark Jackson or JVG.... job pays around $2 million....not $7 or $8 million. Have you ever seen a starting pitcher in baseball getting rocked and the manager leaves that pitcher in the game to take that beating? That's what Silas is....a starting coach taking a beating because his players are so raw. Hope is, can Silas teach the players the basics since he was highly regarded by LeBron, Curry, Doncic as being a great player developer. Will Silas be rewarded for his time and effort if he gets the current players through this, with an extension or cut bait for a more experienced coach after these rookie or initial years of these players?
For me it always starts and stops at the top. When the owner writes a book with the title "Shutup and Listen" that's a clear indication of his leadership style and his abilities. Contrast him with Crane and the Astros, who I believe TF admires and your post is even more profound. We need a strong coach, who can develop these kids, install a system and build a winner. I believe this next offseason is critical to setting the path from losing to winning. Guess we'll see how TF leads the way and how much he's learned from Crane's example.
