It appears that one of my string lights I have outside got cut. I've never heard of anyone doing that before, but I could see some dumbass teen doing that. But what's weird is the part that was cut was in my backyard and was not reachable from outside the gate. (Note: I have a corner lot and a wrought iron fence, so it is possible for someone to reach through and cut it, but it was cut at a point about 5 feet before it reaches the fence. We also have large shrubs just outside the gate that would get in the person's way if he chose to lean in and cut it.) I unplugged the lights on Thursday morning and left them alone until this afternoon when I went out there to turn them on and noticed that they were cut. So it really, really looks like someone just cut them with scissors or something. But... that makes no sense. That would mean that someone would have jumped my fence (I have locks on the fence doors) just to cut one of the two string lights, and then do nothing else. And they would have either done this on Thursday or Friday night, when it was insanely cold. That doesn't make sense; there would be no logical reason to do that. So what else could it have been? The line was sliced clean through. There are no teeth marks or anything. It really looks like a blade. And I haven't mowed the backyard in several weeks. My best guess is a rabbit?? Maybe a rabbit came and with one bite just chomped through it clean, somehow without leaving any mark on either side of the cut. We do have a lot of rabbits out here. I need your help, CF detectives. Wtf happened to ruin my overpriced but cool Twinkly lights.
This happens every year and repeatedly in most suburban neighborhoods. It's usually rabbits or squirrels. It could be humans, but most of the time it's rabbits/squirrels. And yes, they make clean cuts. And if you find your car's electrical system failing because of wires being chewed through/cut, it's probably rats.
Very helpful! Geez, that’s bigger wire than I had thought. It’s probably what the Dr says…vermits…, but wasn’t it really windy Thursday, too? Something sharp enough flying through the air, or maybe wind snapping wire can look clean?
Thanks fellas. I figured it was a rabbit or something, but part of me wanted someone to share a link that showed a serial killer who cuts his victims' Christmas lights before coming to kill the head of household. I've been watching a lot of C-level action movies lately and feel like I have gained a lot of fighting knowledge. I was looking forward to springing out of my bed and beating someone to death while only wearing my boxers.
THE IMPACTS OF COLD TEMPERATURES ON CABLES Cold temperatures place extra strain on cables, causing them to temporarily become brittle and inflexible. Below a certain temperature, it becomes difficult for cables to retain their flexibility and plasticity while being bent. PVC jackets, for example, will stiffen and potentially crack with the slightest touch or movement if they aren’t pulled at or above recommended temperatures.
That could be the next Jordan Peele horror movie. A doppelgänger of you cuts your Christmas lights and then replaces you when you go out to investigate

You cut your own light cord after, instead of that x-mas bonus you were expecting, you were signed up for a "Jelly of the Month" club for a full year. It's also a mystery that, when you put up all your x-mas lights this season, you couldn't figure out over several hours that all you needed to do was flip a light switch in the utility room that turns on/off the electrical outlet that turns the x-mas lights on/off? You do live in this house and have lived there for years...correct?
