No, I want people who are already detained by police to have their immigration status checked along with their other information (probation/parole status for example). You would set up some instant check system, the same way they can check if your registration is current or your driver's license is valid. There used to be a pretty easy proxy (lack of driver's license) that gave a pretty good hint, but California issues driver's licenses to illegal immigrants now. I am not suggesting if you call 911 that they come detain you and check your info with ICE. I'd be interested to see some data. The SPLC seems to think that police departments are choosing to cooperate with ICE, not exactly a bastion of right-wing thought.
Yeah no. If you are convicted of a violent crime sure. But someone who gets stopped at a traffic stop shouldn't have their immigration status checked - that's not helpful and just makes illegal immigrants go further underground and not cooperate police. Sure if you bribe the local police to hold illegal immigrants they may be more receptive to doing it, but there's so much potential abuse that money should not be involved here on a per immigrant basis.
It's helpful if you are trying to find illegal immigrants. Yes, there shouldn't be a bounty, just a standing agreement.
But not helpful making cities safer. You need cooperation of those living in the city. And illegal immigrants are just going to avoid the police if you do this - making them still harder to find and resulting in making it harder to convict criminals because you have less people willing to help the police in investigations or to serve as witnesses.
Unless you believe that illegal immigrants don't commit crimes at all, it absolutely helps make cities safer.
No. People who will face deportation when speaking to police, won't give evidence, won't report crimes, and will avoid any contact with investigators. Illegal immigrants do commit crimes, but less than American born citizens and far less than legal immigrants.
You can bet they aren't hanging around when they are involved in a fender bender. You can't really blame them.
Here's a chart.. You can go here for the complete study.. https://www.ojp.gov/library/publica...-undocumented-immigrants-legal-immigrants-and
Thanks. Here's a conflicting source. "In 2018, the illegal immigrant criminal conviction rate was 782 per 100,000 illegal immigrants, 535 per 100,000 legal immigrants, and 1,422 per 100,000 native‐born Americans." https://www.cato.org/blog/new-research-illegal-immigration-crime-0 In any case, it appears that Sweet Lou was incorrect, and it would help make cities safer.
@bobrek posted the chart. One particular element in politics works very hard to make the opposite seem true.
This from the article you posted. Also that source is focused only on Texas. But even in that study illegal immigrants commit less crimes than American born citizens.
We need much more immigration to keep growing - otherwise the USA will have a massive worker shortage in around 20 years. DD
From the source: "Since Texas is the only state that records and keeps the immigration statuses of those arrested, we can’t make a direct apples‐to‐apples comparison between Texas and other states (every state should record and keep this information so we can answer this important question)." I guess that's why Bobrek's source only focused on Texas as well.
So you're saying 99ers commit more crimes? What about Contributing Members? Sounds like a Ponzi Scheme @Os Trigonum @tinman
