speaking of shanghai, I am visiting there in a day.. anyone knows where can I get some Yao Ming chinese national team jersey or his older team jersey there???
and yao ming stuff there that I can get???

You can buy anything in Shanghia, just make sure you negotiate the price. The price is not fixed in Shanghai.

Almost anything you want, though I've never really saw a Jersey in Shanghai last time I went but that was during winter, so maybe they have some now since it's summer.

For street vendors/ markets without price stickers

a) If you look like an American, you can be sure they charged you 3 times the price they charge shanghainese, haggle a bit.

b) If you don't speak Shanghainese but you're still speaking Chinese and look chinese, they'll charge you double. Haggle a bit also.

c) If you speak Shanghainese and look shanghainese, they are over charging you by atleast 40%, try to get it down to 70% of the price they are asking, though 80% can be reasonable depending on the product.

For stores, even big ones, with price stickers.

The exception is if you're going to a store on huahai street. Don't or do very little haggling, it's just not done on that street unless you want to look like a chump.

 

I lived there for four months during Yao's first year in the league and tried my hardest to get his jersey. I failed miserably, but good luck to you. I read an article somewhere that some people sell bootleg jerseys near the stadiums, but this is third hand info. contrary to what marketeers think, very few people in China actually buy jerseys with players names on them.

As far as I know, in addition to the promise to Yao, Steve come to Shanghai is mainly because he is invited by NBA to promote the Rockets/Kings preseason games.

Is it eligible for Francis to play for Rockets in one of the exhibition game? That would be cool!!!!

Imagine how Rockets will dominate that Kings when Steve, T-Mac & Yao plays together!

I hope they would sell some jerseys since the olympics games are coming next month.

 

I've notice from a lot of posts and my personal experience that jerseys are hard to get in Shanghai (even bootleg ones). I think a lot of Shanghainese/Chinese views Jerseys as glorified wife beaters and don't think they are something you wear outside..

Now, with more influence of western culture that train of thoughts is changing, but I've still yet to see a Yao jersey, but if you can get one cheap/bootleg, go for it.

As far as haggling, do it seriously. The prices are marked up because they know everyone haggles (outside of huahai street).
