I really hope this helps VC and Sega compete. In my opinion, they have been putting out a vastly superior product in all of the big 4 major pro sports for years now, but have been crushd by EA's mass marketing to casual gamers. I think all 2k games are going to get the 19.99 price point now, so I am going to buy them all, even if I barely ever play them. I have no excuse not to.
Supposedly, ESPN is doing this for this year only in order to gain more recognition and show consumers their product. This will get people addicted (and in the case of XBox, online), resulting to greater sales next year.
Don't judge the ESPN game by last year's running engine. You had to adjust sliders to make that running engine fair. Hopefully they set a default better this year. So now to your assessment, last year's running engine aside (easily fixed with sliders), how is Madden better? And how is it NFL Blitz?
I just feel like I have more control of my players in Madden In Madden, If I see a blitz coming from the left side, before the play at the LOS, I can tell my fullback to block to the left side and he will pick up that blitzing CB/LB in ESPN, players seem out of position a lot and they love to take weird angles on plays.
I totally agree. I was amazed at how good VC's games were back when it started with NFL/NBA 2K. They brought on a new age of sports games. You know, it was Sega and VC that invented Franchise/Dyntasy mode, if I'm not mistaken. I never even consider other makers games, just go with these guys. Yeah, those are exactly the things I was talking about, coma. They will be really nice, cool features. It will probably take a while to get good at and take advatage of which could prove to be frustrating. Once mastered, though, you could definitely beat up on a friend who hasn't played the game much.
Read this preview, http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/sports/espnnflfootball2005/preview_6100050.html and watch the movies on that site, this game is gonna be incredible!
I was an ESPN/2K football guy until Madden 2004 came out. There were enough changes in that game, particularly in the franchise mode, to make me an EA fanboy.
Yep, the owner mode is by far my favorite feature from last year. This year they are making free agency more difficult as well. On top of that the game will lean toward the defensive side for the first time, can't wait. I'll spend the extra 10 bucks to pick up the collectors edition. It allows you to go back and play some of the classic Maddens from way back.
they have sliders and go watch these movies http://www.operationsports.com/reviews.asp?game=espnnfl2005xbox the running game has been fixed for sure
They want desperately to compete with the grip Madden has on the market. It's a good idea; they have a pretty solid game, lots of features, and combined with an earlier release and much smaller price they will get a lot of people to try it out that didn't before. EA moving to XBOX Live hurts a little though, since they (ESPN) could market that above Madden in the past. It's part of the reason I got NCAA and will get Madden...to play them against other folks on Live. Of course, the Madden Collector's edition almost makes me think about getting it for my PS2, but that's just for the novelty extras.
espn aint desperate b/c they want to get users from gameday and fever and all of madden fanboys to give espn a shot

You don't release your game at 20 bucks unless you're trying to make a hell of a move. And with the money Madden pulls in, any competitor in their right mind would be 'desperate' to get a big chunk of it. And Gameday and Fever users? What was that, like two?
