how can soccer not find a better way to decide games than penalty kicks?

it would be like deciding an american football game with field goals

What a great pair of games today. High drama to take it to PKs. Argentina deserved the win, but Netherlands played great when they were desperate. I wouldn't mind Messi getting his World Cup.

What would be your idea? Can't just keep playing.

I hate it when people say crap like this. "It would be like blah blah blah." No it wouldn't. The sports are so impossibly different in how you score. You can win an American football game by not even scoring a touchdown. Even in basketball, there's different point values based on where you take the shot. Baseball doesn't have the physical fitness requirements and they can play on forever. There are no other means in proper football. You have to score a goal. At some point, you have to stop playing and decide it somehow. The old MLS/American style is something that's been brought up but I can't imagine it will ever happen in world football. Spot kicks are the way to go.

I think it's another penalty event.

I agree with this, but shootouts should be exceptionally rare instead of 40% of matches. Find ways to make that happen.

    Golden goal is better
Forces teams to play to score rather than negative anti football

    i'm not sure tbh
if anything it makes mistakes that much more costly and makes teams take a more defensive/careful approach

there is just no way around pks other than having 10 subs and putting in a fresh team in which is not realistic
