If you signed Nimmo for CF and Chaz/Brantley was a strict platoon with Chas as the backup CF and RF and DHing some I would be incredibly happy with that.
Uh that's not true. Baker was gone the year before he made his major league debut. Maybe in ST? He was a AA catcher at the time so I'm not sure would have been in camp long...
lol they must really have no confidence in Lee or Diaz for next season. I also can't imagine them trading Maldy. For what, exactly?
The shift going away with help Yordan and also he was clearly banged up for a month when he was awful. As good as he was last year I think he can be that good for an entire year without the month of nothing, plus I think a few more balls can find holes without the shift. I’m not talking about a lot better but I am talking about the difference between All Star and MVP/ best bat in the game. I think he has that level in him and if we are going to see it then it’s likely in the next year or two just because 27/28 is a ball players absolute apex. but yeah, your point is valid.
Yeah, I don't follow non-Astros much but I'm not blown away by any of the free agent outfield options. Lots of teams doing stuff to just do stuff and overpaying for the privilege. We have the luxury to not be in that mode. I now trust Chas and I'd rather stand pat and see what pops up at the trade deadline. I don't think that way about catcher. We desperately need to upgrade and get younger. I'm more than OK with Vasquez coming back and being the primary for a year or two. Would like the A's guy but not at what they seem to be asking.
14 defensive runs saved in his career, positive framing metrics from Fangraphs 3 of the last 4 seasons. It’s certainly an upgrade of Castro being the backup last offseason.
I don't think it's necessarily that. Why gamble on youth if you're playing to win now? They got lucky with Pena.
Nope- you have it correct. The thing is- you are talking about a healthy Uncle Mike and I’m of the opinion that animal doesn’t exist in the wild, and if it does it will take too long to find out for sure. But all the stuff you say makes it why we should sign Conforto instead. Or, better than that Nimmo.
Yep. This last part is my point- we have stuff that ends up being performance based to catch stuff we don’t measure, but those measures don’t see it either. It’s possible he’s so awesome at this skill that he inspires others to do it even better than he does when he doesn’t start, but I think that’s about as likely to be the case as me claiming I haven’t been mauled by a bear because I bought bear insurance or something.
You take the chance with him in mind going into spring... if medicals don't check out you just trade for a platoon pair with McCormick. Leftfielders who hit righties aren't expensive...
If Vasquez is down to return, just sign him. I don’t like these - “cause Baker knows him from the Reds” kinda deals - I’m fine running Vasquez and Maldy back out if Vasquez is down
I doubt a catcher is urgent there's plenty of quality options on the defensive side. Vasquez's market could thin as more top FA's come off the board.
I think we were going to bring in another guy regardless if we didn’t get Contreras. He’s not going to “block” anyone, just there to be a competent backup.
