I've never seen a bunch of spot kicks as horrid as Spain's. It was almost as if they just didn't care. So sadly nonchalant. They deserve the exit after that display.

Players continue to ignore the statistics on penalty kicks because they are afraid to airmail the penalty. Your odds are much better to go upper shelf as they are less seldom saved. Yet, you rarely see it.
And goalies ignore the statistics too because they are too embarrassed to not move. But almost 30% of penalties are taken right down the middle. If you don't move, you are likely to get at least one easy save. Yes, you will look like an idiot... until you get the save.
You don't have to go upper 90 but you do need to put some pace on it and it does need to be in the corner. Those were sad nothing kicks that weren't down the middle and weren't in the corner. So easily saved. It takes cojones to go high with them. There is a much finer line, technique wise when you go high that makes it more likely to miss. And those are the ones that end up as memes where the ball is still traveling around the world.

Indeed. With any luck, COMNEBOL and CONCACAF will come to the realization that an Americas tournament every 4 years is a fantastic idea that will be as great as the Euros. It'll make for an awesome summer of football every 2 years...assuming FIFA doesn't do something so stupid as to put a future World Cup in a desert country requiring the reconfiguring of every domestic club calendar and having to play in the winter.
