According to GM Jeff Bagwell, Yordan is only going to be playing in LF 45 % of the time or 70 games or so.
Bagwell seems like those old school guys that thought baseball was only played the right way during his Era. Loved him as a player but man I hope he does not have a prominent role in our organization, frankly biggio seems more suited for that
Another person(John Denton) is saying Cardinals doesn't want to go 4 years but have reached what Contreras wants per year. I wonder if he's actually gotten a 4/5 year offer from either team. I wonder if he just signs with whichever team offers more years. If it's the same, no idea if he prefers St. Louis or Houston.
Report reveals Cards don’t want to go past 3 years. They have ~51mil for 3 years on the table right now.
The Astros haven’t offered 5 years to Contreras for the money he wants. They have discussed vesting options and Astros have shied away so far. Contreras camp is hoping Murphy is dealt so that it potentially increases the teams bidding for him. Cardinals think they will get Murphy or Contreras. Hopefully seeing some of the contracts handed out today will show how the Astros didn’t overpay for Abreu or Montero. The Astros were smart to sign them early before the market really started churning.
Based on the reporting from that Cards beat writer, they’re not budging on their 3 year offer. Seems strange for a guy who’s only 30.
I'm kind of preparing for the Astros to strike out on the guys they've talked about and end up with some bargain basement consolation prize.
IMO, 4 and especially 5 years for Contreras is a little long. Soon, Altuve and Bregman will have their deal expire, and hopefully they can extend Tucker, Peña, and Javier. The underrated part of a potential Murphy trade is how cheap he’ll be while under team control. Oakland wants MLB players, see if something like Garcia, Y Diaz, Joe Perez, Meyers, Maton works. If not I’m perfectly fine with a 3 year deal for Vazquez. Not the best bat in terms of hard hit balls but he can probably hit about 260 or so with low whiff rates over a full season of regular workload.
Is it really striking out thou? The Astros just aren't like The Phillies trying to buy a world series... Astros for a while now just don't make impulsive and poor financial decisions. They want Contreras on their terms not his, I mean this is how a good org should be ran. If they don't want to give him 5 years then I trust them. The Astros find ways to make up for not having to pay guys that will tie them up financially. Vazquez is also not a bad option for less money so they are probably exploring signing him instead if Contreras won't sign....
Would much rather give Contreras a questionable contract than make a questionable trade for Murphy, especially given what Oakland might demand.
