If you just want inning buffers you can get that in free agency for a lot cheaper than 43 million dollars. I suspect the Astros will try one of their AAA guys if a 7th starter is needed. If there is a wave of injuries we would have been in rough shape regardless just like every other team.
That's still a massive overpay if Contreras only catches 50 games. Contreras is a great hitting catcher. When you move him to another position, his hitting doesn't stand out nearly as much, and his defense turns into worst-in-the-league status. He should either be the regular catcher or we should not sign him -- especially with the youthful talent that we have at catcher (Lee + Diaz).
If we had another strong prospect to put in there instead of Brown, i'd do it with Bieber having three years of control. I wouldn't include Brown though, not after seeing him have success in the bigs himself I doubt Leon, Barber, Melton, K Lee, J Perez and Paredes would get it done, but i'd find out
Going to laugh my ass off when Crane now signs Judge. Get your popcorn ready with the JV domino done there should be at least 2 high profile FAs heading our way.
Not to start a completely different argument....but if we would just play McCormick against all LHP in addition to the games he already gets out there, his numbers would very likely be good enough we wouldn't see a great need to "upgrade" CF
Somehow the Astros lost their general manager and the best pitcher in baseball from last year and yet I still have faith they will be better…thank goodness Drayton no longer owns the team…
Not worried about injuries as much as just wear/tear for guys who haven't had to pitch an entire seasons' worth of innings. Every Astros great team has needed an innings buffer from unexpected guys, whether it was Fiers in 2017, Miley in 2019, Odorizzi last 2 years. But that also puts more decision making pressure/management strategy on Dusty who obviously is better with sure things. As he said, "I didn't have to do ****!" when it came to this past year's team. He wasn't wrong... but it also is unlikely to be replicated. Will see if he spends up to the tax though... again, that's a lot of money.
Exactly. We've got money now to get aggressive if the case presents itself. Brandon Nimmo and Jake McCarthy are of interest. Speedy, athletic, left-handed hitting OFers.
$41 million to spend. Here’s what I would do: 2 years $10 million ($5 AAV) for Omar Narváez 2 years $28 million ($14 AAV) for Johnny Cueto or Corey Kluber 4 years $80 million ($20 AAV) for Nimmo or Benetendi or alternatively 6 years $150 million ($25 AAV) extension for Kyle Tucker 4 years $80 million ($20 AAV) for Nimmo or Benetendi
Santander: I think i'd still rather keep Whitley just to see if he can ever figure it out, but a fair offer. I'm not crazy about the low on base power guys, personally I think with the lineup we have i'd rather have a high on base guy to mix in O'Neill: Upside is great. No way I would include Brown in a deal for him, not with all of his injuries and the year he is coming off of Brown: Already 30 but coming off of a good year. If he was platooned he could be pretty productive though, dude is awful vs LHP. I guess it depends on how we view Leon as an organization, seems too much to me, but I do think Brown could be an ok guy here if used correctly Happ: As much as I like Diaz potential, he isn't going to be a catcher long term. I'd do that one
Yea I agree. If there is a potential ace we could get via trade, i'd be all in. Otherwise, let's roll with what we have
The Astros are already paying for one damaged arm to try and make it through a 5 year deal... Rodon may be gets 6 when its all said/done... no thanks.
