The only way I would think he should get sacked after this season if we don't improve is if we fill in all the holes with our top choices. But with the team is as it stands, I don't expect dramatic improvement this year.
On the other hand ... You think JVG is worse than Rudy. You think Yao is noboby, TMac is nobody. Steve and Cat are all-stars ... You think CD, Les committed atrocity by trading Steve and Cat away ... Yet , you expect the Rockets to get 50 wins, a mark your beloveds could not get! You want to set the bar high so you have reasons to hate. If it eats you up so much being a Rockets' fan, why not go cheer for someone else?
I have to disagree with you there. As usual, we had no confirmation of what or who the source was, but the story we heard was that Les and JVG had a shouting match. Does anyone else remember this? I think someone knew someone who was a ballboy/towelboy type of thing, and had heard things here and there. Then again, it could have been a dream, one can never be 100% sure. But I'm pretty confident of that story.
Team needs to build chemistry, adjust to each other, adjust to a better Western conference. Elite West teams are all improved, except for the Lakers. Utah is back in the picture, and Portland will battle. Suns can be good. Offense needs to change. It will focus more and more on 2 players, rather than one player vs. rest of the team.
Wow, EXACTLY 62 for each poll option. We're split exactly 50-50, I wonder what Les and CD think about this? BTW, CD is not the only one responsible for trades. It's a group decision by Les, CD and JVG.
Unless there's a total collapse, this is his year to consolidate the changes. The year after this... he has to go places.
Well, let's see whe else we get. But I agree 50 wins seems reasonable and has been pointed out, that guarantees nothing in terms of how well we do in the playoffs. JVG? He did ok, but given Yao's improvement just making the playoffs doesn't make me think he did an exceptional job. But this is the NBA: 1) If T-Mac can't stand his alleged tantrums JVG will be gone. 2) If Yao starts looking unusally unhappy JVG will be gone. 3) If either one or two happens JVG will be gone if we're on a pace to win 60 games. 4) If we get off to a miserable start... I'd say probably. But I agree with Sane's premise: I don't think Les will be satisfied if we don't get significantly better results. And some of that is aesthetic. We played bad basketball last year - even games we won drove me crazy. And yes, I remember "uglyball" well - but last year gave ugly a bad name.
Jeff Van Gundy barring a total collapse is gonna get at least 3 years to prove himself. He's just beginning to build the team the way he wants it to look. He coached Rudy's team to the playoffs. He deserves at least 2 years to acquire talent and see what he can do.
Where are all those "Phil Jackson" haters? I thought anyone could have won with talent. Now we have a "Top 5" talent in TMac, a 2nd best center in the league. That automatically makes us a title contender according to many here. But be seriously, JVG should be given at least two years to try his magic with this roster. I always believe that a coach has to have at least two years to show his value, three years should be more than enough to do an evalution, unless you are Phil Jackson!
Phil Jackson is looking for a new job? he said he's going to retire is that why u want to dump JVG now? How many wives you had in ur life? 6? Don't we all likes to dump somebody for better? or worse?
I don't want to "dump JVG now." I don't think he should've been hired, but that's a separate issue. He is here, and did an adequate, if uninspiring job in his first season. As far as "success," given this talent, 50+ wins, and 6-7 games in the second round is not unreasonable. If JVG cannot accomplish that, he deserves to be out on the street. As far as Phil Jackson goes, he is almost certainly not going to coach in the NBA this season. However, next year is a different matter. When asked, he said: "I don't anticipate coaching. I wouldn't rule it out, but I am not going to solicit an NBA job." It is my opinion that he would listen if the Rockets came calling. The man knows talent, and has proven he can win with good people. If Les truly believes this is "championship caliber talent," they need a championship caliber head coach.
edc pretty much just said everything for me (right down to adequate, if uninspiring), though i may accept a very competitive (read: 7 games) first round outing depending on how the west shakes out. i thought we should've won more last year (we fired rudy and now we're happy with 2 extra wins?) and so anything less than 50 wins would give me little confidence in jvg's overall abilities to craft a winner out of our team, especially given how valuable a second star can be to a team. this isn't like the early francis/mobley years (or even pre-tmac yao years) where patience was a way of life because we needed so many pieces to even think of a title. we've got our two horses and i'm not anxious to waste precious years of our possible championship window letting jvg see if he can figure it out or shape the team perfectly to his needs. winning and climbing the nba charts needs to happen now. if it appears we are on a heavy upward ascension through the nba, ok. if we win 48 or 49 and we still hear we need better role players and jvg doesn't have his type of players yet, goodbye. then go get that smug b*stard who i hate and who is overrated but who seems to always win, the zen master (can't believe i'm even allowing myself to think in that direction).
