BTW - when I first read that the first round draft pick was an issue, I thought that Seattle was not willing to accept having our first foisted off on them. Am I the only one who saw it this way?

Okay, a couple of things to note:

    1. Daniels and Jerome James fit almost perfectly with the Trade Exception. Daniels=2.2 mill and James=4.5 million.
Daniels and James for a #1 and the TE work out under the cap.

    2. Next year if Daniels opts out of his contract we still get his bird rights. The bird rights get traded along with the player.

I sure hope the CD is looking to get James and Daniels for a #1. Then I'd do it just because we'd be filling two spots that we need. The draft is a crapshoot anyway and if we can get two contributors in James and Daniels then that's about as much as we can expect out of two low 1st round picks anyway.

That's what I've been thinking. James' contract ends in '05. Two season rental of a backup 5 that then comes off the cap. Pretty good, if you ask me.

Foisted? You make it sound like a liability.

If a 1st round pick was such a liability, why did Orlando trade a potentially much higher pick just to take Jameer Nelson?

Orlando gave up a future 1st that was only Top 5 protected.

Every draft has players who fall. Every draft has late 1st round sleepers. The only teams who never get those sleepers are those who never pick.

That will be just a few spots after our #1 pick. :)

Yes, but you say everything is ridiculous so that is nothing new.

Bottom line is the Rockets need a PG that will protect the ball and play some good defense. Daniels fits the bill. IMO late 1st round picks have little value and a crap shoot so I would be more than happy to give that up for a player you'll know what you're getting in return.

Nothing as ridiculous as you were here.

Talk about ridiculous. At least one of us was correct.

You know what? I want to win NOW. I don't want to pass up on a chance to get a starting PG for a team that can win now just because some guy MIGHT fall in the draft. I'm tired of sitting back hoping for something good to happen in the draft, lets just start building the team. We've been rebuilding for 4 years, now it's time to start building ON a team instead of rebuilding a team.

No, Daniels signed with seattle before last season and it was 3-year contract with the final year voidable. If he opts out next year, we won't have his birds right (you need three years to have the bird rights).

Wouldn't the Rockets have his early bird right though?

I agree. Antonio Daniels? That's our big move for a new point guard?? We'd be better off starting Lue!! Why has Daniels been on so many teams in his career? Because he stinks!! I can't believe we are giving up so much for this guy.

Okay, my bad. Thanks for the clarification. Although technically, we'd still have his Early Bird rights which would let up sign him up to the equivilent of an MLE contract. And if he can get more than MLE money next year, then he must have had a pretty damn good season.

or those who don't want to give up a draft pick... remember

Daniels was a lottery player himself, so ask yourslef this... is he better for this team NOW, then what we MIGHT get in the first round in, say, 2006 ?

First of all Daniels does the same thing as Fisher. As for Daniels stinking because he has been on so many different teams, look at Billups and Hudson and Sam Cassell. Yeah that's the Rockets big move at PG because we don't need a star PG, just a solid PG. The guy doesn't suck.

No. I really like Jim Jackson. I thought it was great when we signed him. This is not the same.

Ok. Maybe I was a little harsh by saying he sucks. But I really
don't think that giving our TE and a first rounder for him is a good move.

Why has Daniels been on so many teams in his career? Because he stinks!!

I guess Sam Cassell stinks to. Daniels has been on four teams (San Antonio, Vancouver, Portland, Seattle), Cassell has been on SIX teams (Houston, New Jersey, Milwaukee, Phoenix, Dallas, Minnesota). Yes Cassell was the back-up PG for 2 championship teams, Daniels was the back-up PG for a championship team as well. I'm not comparing Daniels to Cassell, just showing you that just because you bounce around to team doesn't mean you stink.

No. The rules say you can't make a trade that leaves you w/o a 1st round pick in two consecutive drafts. Since the 2004 draft is past tense, the future 1st is next summer

    Deuce -
There is a problem in that your equation is incomplete until we see how the remaining portion of the TE is used. Let's say the Rox make a deal for Battie for the remaining part of the TE. Sure changes the equation, right? IMHO, Daniels + Battie > Pavel Podkolzine + whatever slug is available @~ 21 next year.
