There is a gay teenage character. You know... something that doesn't exist in everyday life :rolleyes:and when companies include gay characters, they are accused of being "woke". I guess because people don't think gays should be represented in movies. It is odd to me when people turn their back on movies simply because there is a gay character or there is a split second peck on the lips between 2 adult cartoon characters.

I watched Lightyear with the grandkids - 14, 11, 9, 7, 5 - and not a single one reacted to that split second kiss. My wife didn't even notice it, yet it became a huge negative in the "non-woke" community.

It's even scarier. They are projecting their desire of having a society where gays simply don't exist. It's nearly a latant genocidal thought.

It's a cottage industry. Outrage merchants pandering to and creating culture warriors through manufactured moral panic.

I don't know how prevalent homosexuality is in the story of Strange World. It's not mentioned in any trailers or promotional material.

The problem with Strange World is that it looks generic and boring. Disney appears to have just picked up a script off the cutting room floor, shoved a bunch of A list actors into the voice roles (normally a huge tell that an animated movie will suck), and shipped it.

All that being said, I do think that word-of-mouth about a 'gay lead character' would absolutely harm a Disney film's bottom line. America is at a weird crossroads with homosexuality. A lot of people view its existence in media as abnormal and political. The 'how am I supposed to explain this to my kids?" crowd is still a very large part of the Disney consumer-base. Christian fundamentalists notwithstanding, II think this concern is rooted in the fear that their children will emulate what they see... which goes back to the whole 'choice vs not-a-choice' debate.

The question I have for the Dim Tool watchers out there is, how much homosexuality, transgenderism, interracial coupling, etc, is acceptable to you before something is 'woke'? It sure feels like their answer is 'zero'. These things exist in real life, so they're going to appear in media too.

Just bigots who refuse to accept the fact that not everyone in their view of a "perfect world" is wired just like them.

I read an article from a pro gay inclusion author. Their take was that if the movie flops it will give Disney an excuse to quit being inclusive and quit including gay characters.

I have no problem with (moderate) Muslims. I only have a problem with the ideology of Islam.

In another thread I made the comment that right wing in America has more in common with Islamists and a couple of people (including ATW) scoffed.

Yes, the right wing HATES muslims! It's true! Bravo or whatever.

But it's true. Right wing Christianity in this country is extremely similar to Islamism. They hold to a lot of the same tenets, have the same reactionary policy goals and hate each other lol.

    So.

    You know what's funny?

You are right, and you are wrong.

I sat with a Saudi sheikh the other day (in Riyadh), we chatted a bit about football, a bit about politics...and he said, clearly, we are much more aligned with the Republicans. Same values, family first, against all that woke stuff, etc. (he spoke perfect English).

And having met an Evangelical Christian in Houston, Paul Pressler, one of the two architects of the "conservative" takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention (who later turned out to be a gay sexual predator), I can see the parallels.

But, funnily enough, it's the Left who refused to call a spade a spade, and who turn a blind eye to discrimination against gays and women...because in their hierarchy of caring for "victims", Muslims are relatively high up, so they are largely exempt from criticism, even if their beliefs are, indeed, at least as "conservative" as those of the American "right" Evangelicals the Left fights tooth and nail.

Obama, whom I like personally, never even called Islamist terrorism what it is...painstakingly avoided calling it Islamist terror, even when the terrorists stated their religious motives explicitly.

So it's a bit more complex than what you say.

But please remember - being critical of a religion/religious ideology does not mean hating the people who happen to have been born into that religion.

Similarly, I don't hate all Russian chicks just because their country is a fascist, war-mongering hellhole.
