We can sign this guy, Marc Jackson for 4.5mil exception and get a big banger on 4 or 5, This guy has offensive move and can be another big treat on the paint. What do you guys think? since we might not get luck to bring the Dream back in Rockets uniform. ------------------ Rudy T. will find and fulfill Rockets destiny.
I know I'm probably in the minority on this as there seems to be quite a groundswell of appreciation for Jackson's game.I applaud his determination and hard work, but I really think he is overrated.I'm not saying he won't go on to have a nice career. He probably will, but I want a guy with more upside or who has already arrived occupying that capspace.I just think we can do better with the room we have to maneuver. We need even more defense IMO and he doesn't bring that. ------------------ Everybody has a little bit of Watergate in em - Billy Graham [This message has been edited by hardwood (edited July 17, 2001).]
I'm with you on this one hardwood. Having never seen the guy play I can only go by reports from warrior fans on his abilities, and the consensus seems to be that his defense is not great. Couple that with the fact that he's not really a shot-blocker and that's it for me as far as playing him at C. As a PF I hear his footspeed is lacking - I'd rather MoT, we know what we're getting and he definitely has offensive skills. Not to say I don't like Marc Jackson, I'd like him, but at ~1-2mill per year, anything more than that would be too much!! ------------------
I heard that Marc Jackson is going to sign with the Sonics. Im not sure how true this rumor is, but it would be dissappointing because he could really help us out. ------------------ "I would like to live forever, because we should not live forever, because if we were ever supposed to live forever, then we would live forever, but we cannot live forever, which is why I would not live forever." -Miss Alabama in the 1994 Miss Universe contest
Most Rockets fans arn't to interested in Jackson. However, ever since I saw him play last season, I've thought he would fit in very well with the Rockets. First, he has all the tools - he's big, he can shoot, he has post moves, he can shoot the three, he's aggressive, and he can make his free throws. His favorite team growing up also happend to be the Rockets. Now I'm not saying we should not go after Dream, but if the Dream does not sign with the Rockets, CD shouldn't waste any time in getting Marc Jackson. ------------------ Life quotes: -Statistics are like a bikini; what they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital. -You can get much farther with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word alone. -Anyone who can walk to the welfare office can walk to work. -Budget: A method for going broke methodically. -We've sent a man to the moon, and thats 29000 miles away. Here is an excerpt from San Francisco Chronicle. I say if we can get him for cheap...why the hell not? He's better than Cato and Collier. Btw, this is my first post. I've been reading this BBS for weeks. ____ SFgate.com 17Jul01 Jackson presents a possible quandary for the Warriors. He was on his way to a rookie-of-the-year season before groin woes put him down for the year. In 48 games, Jackson averaged 13.2 points and 7.5 rebounds, productive numbers considering he played only 29.4 minutes a game. Though Jackson could command some interest on the market, teams might not want to commit a load of cash to a player who is still unproven, and the Warriors are looking at it the same way. Jackson made $317,000 last season and is aiming for a much fatter wallet this time around. Because Jackson is a restricted free agent, Golden State has the right to match any offer up to the midlevel salary exception. It's not yet official, but that figure will be in the $4.5 million range. Agent Joe Bell repeatedly has refused to comment on Jackson's status. Numerous calls to Jackson's home in the Philadelphia area haven't been returned. Seattle has come up as a possible destination for Jackson if the Warriors don't keep him. Chicago would have been a possibility, but the Bulls are going to pry Eddie Robinson from Charlotte, eliminating the desire for Jackson. Orlando might have been interested in Jackson, until the Magic elected to bring in veterans Patrick Ewing and Horace Grant. Potential vacancies in Toronto evaporated after Oakland native Antonio Davis and Jerome Williams elected to stay with the Raptors. Jackson can hope only that a club reacts to him in the way the New Jersey Nets have with Philadelphia's second-string center Todd MacCulloch. Despite his lack of pedigree in the league, the Nets have tendered MacCulloch a six- year deal that will give the Canadian $33.75 million. New Jersey will pay MacCulloch the midlevel exception the first year, and the money will grow from there. ------------------ There goes the challenger being chased by the blue blue meanies on wheels. I just noticed the discussion of Marc Jackson's rebounding in another, much longer thread. Rather than clutter that one up further, I'll give my firsthand point of view here. Jackson is a good, not great rebounder. IMO, he may get slightly fewer rebounds than he "should" for a C/PF his size, simply because of his lack of leaping ability and not-especially-long arms. Regarding the extended theoretical discussion of team rebounding versus number of possessions, I should point out that there's a relationship beyond the obvious one (i.e., rebounds=possessions). Because Golden State shot so poorly, they attempted to compensate by regularly having 3 or more players crashing the offensive glass. If they didn't get the rebound, the opponent usually had a numerical fast-break advantage and scored quickly ... leading to more possessions within a 48-minute game. (I used to joke that the Warriors' idea of "transition defense" was three guys going for an offensive rebound, another trying for a backcourt steal, and poor Mookie Blaylock backpedaling to fend off the inevitable 2-on-1 or 3-on-1 break.) Similarly, the Rockets' famous Hakeem-and-four-shooters-at-the-arc offense during their championship years limited both offensive rebounds (because Hakeem was the only player close to the hoop) and total possessions (because the 3-point shooters could easily get back in time to prevent fast breaks). ------------------
I've never seen him shoot the three pt. shot but I still think If Dream doesn't resign we don't have many options of big men... What I know he will give Houston is REBOUNDS, we don't have a rebounding center especially if Dream doesn't comeback. Cato and Collier aren't very good rebounders but Jackson is(he would give us extra shots and more second chances). IMHO... ------------------
Marc Jacson can be a good addition to Rockets whether or not Dream will sign with the Rockets, For 4.5mil exception!Think about it. Shake not Stir! ------------------ Rudy T. will find and fulfill Rockets destiny.

Good option. It is also more additional trade bait for the Rockets future to use on Lafrenz or Duncan. Respectable big men can always be traded later on (except for Cato, not remotely respectable) ------------------ "Instinctly u recognize things, now take advantage of what u just recognized!".. Hakeem..
If we are going to loose Dream might just well sign Marc Jackson, since there is not much center available. ------------------ Rudy T. will find and fulfill Rockets destiny.
If you want to get a center for less than the max, you're going to have to take a chance on players like Jackson. He proved a whole lot more than Cato ever did-- Jackson did it for 50 regular season games, Cato for about 8 preseason games. There are few proven quality centers in the NBA, and when they come around, many are like Antonio Davis and cost 12 million. However, there is one proven quality center out there right now, and he would just cost about 6.5 million per season. His name is Hakeem Olajuwon. Sauce, I know this isn't the case with you, but several posters I've noticed are against both Marc Jackson and Hakeem. If you don't like Jackson because he hasn't proven enough, there's a good proven center available who has played with the Rockets for 17 years, and you guys seem to be angry about giving him a reasonable deal. The only summers we'll have before Steve's contract extension goes into effect are this summer and next summer, and I can't understand the logic behind passing on both Hakeem, Marc Jackson, and others for the very minimal chance of getting to pay Lafrentz near the max. (and I'm sure his contract will be extended also) ------------------ Draftsource.net-- the premier source for draft info. Profiles, rankings, mock drafts, and more! The Mo Taylor Fan Site
Assuming Dream does leave: 1. Jackson is the best available center via FA. He is an average center (more offensive upside than defensive upside). The good news is there aren't many centers in the game who are above average anymore anyways (Shaq, David, Dikembe and Alonzo & Dream if healthy come to mind). 2. Big question for the Rockets are what are the team plans. If they think they can win this year then they have to upgrade the center position from Cato/Collier. Jackson would be an upgrade. If however they think they are still 3-5 years away from being a legitimate threat (threat to make it out of the playoff 1st round or to play for the Western conference championship) they may roll the dice and see what is available via FA, trade, draft next year. I sincerely hope we do something. Like everyone else I hate Cato and (sorry Cat) but I hate thinking about Collier playing significant minutes either. Hopefully Dream will re-sign and we won't have to even think about it though!
Cat, I'm just not sold on Marc. He had a great start but his numbers dropped ater the first 30 games. He's decent and could prove to be above average, but I'm afraid that this isn't the time to take $6m gambles. I know we agree that Collier can give quality minutes. No one we have or that is available (Save Sabonis) sets the picks and can hit the 18' junper. That is what we need. As far as Hakeem goes, I love him but I'm just getting a little tired of his shtick. Time to let it go. One thing you have to remember is that we need to build a team to contend, not pick up pieces because they are the best of what's left. Why blow our wad with 6 year deal on a potential player when we can wait till other opportunities (Lafrentz, etc.) present themselves. We would be screwed if we had that much money locked up on a center if someone better came along. Do you ever think that Marc would be the starting center on a championship team? No. Do you expect us to contend for the championship in the next 6 years (I do). You never know what will happen. I'm just saying that I would prefer the unknown than settling for the known. The known being a center that would be dominated by the big guys (he's limited defensively). I would prefer to give Collier and (gulp!) Cato the opportunities. The only think Cato can do is improve his rade value. Maybe he averages 8 and 8 his year and everyone druels at his potential again next summer. Maybe Lafrentz can be had for a pick and a player or in a 3-way with Toronto. Maybe we miss the playoffs and get lucky with a lottery pick. Too many maybe's to settle on Marc. Hell, I would prefer o get Othella back and play him over Jackson. He's better offensively (except for the black hole) and certainly no worse defensively. I know where you're coming from and it's a valid idea. I'm just a little tired of settling for players that aren't part of the bigger picture. ------------------
I say let's find a way to get LaFrentz. Marc Jackson is just a one-year wonder who was just playing to get into the league. He reminds me of Cato, in that once he gets his contract he's going to say, "oh well, I'm paid now". Do we really want two cap-eaters sitting on the bench or should we go after a proven player like LaFrentz via trade? I say LaFrentz. Now put that in your pipe and smoke it. ------------------ The intelligent prediction from Moses Malone: "Foe, Foe, Foe".
You guys are way too overcautious. We made one mistake! Not every young center looking to make a break will turn into Kelvin Cato. The chance of landing Lafrentz is extremely remote. The Nuggets have the option on his contract to extend it to 02-03. All we have are rumors that Issel doesn't like him. And you guys want to give up Hakeem, Marc Jackson, and other solid big men for the small chance to talk to a 12/8/2.6 center who will command near the max? And probably won't be available until 02-03, when we have no money? I don't understand it. ------------------ Draftsource.net-- the premier source for draft info. Marc Jackson would be a perfect fit for the team with his hustle, rebouding, and desire to play defense. Olajuwon has always requested the basketball and is not expected to change in the near future. We need more roll players like Marc to push under achievers such as Fato (fake Cato). In addition, Mo T is not a rebounder, he needs help and can get that from EG and Marc Jackson. ------------------ Let go and let GOD!
o.k. Cat, what did you see in Marc Jackson in just that half season that gives you the impression that he's the player the rockets need? I'm not saying that we should just focus on LaFrentz, all I'm saying is that we need a proven player to go after and not throw our money to a guy who hasn't proved anything. And besides, the guy is basically a power forward playing out of position like A. Davis. Jackson hasn't proved enough to me to say o.k., lets pay him 4.5 mil. Also, he missed the entire second half of the season due to a groin injury. If you can recall, Clyde and Chuck had groin injuries, but did you see them miss an entire half-season? I'm telling you, he's Cato's clone when it comes to work ethic. ------------------ The intelligent prediction from Moses Malone: "Foe, Foe, Foe".
