I was following Jeff's rule that the album had to be before 1980. ;) Probably should've listed some QUEEN in there as well. Don't live in Houston, but I'll have to remember that, thanks! Why would you request that song anyway, BJ? That's pretty funny.

There are days when no band holds a candle to Queen. They were so great.

The band had already played everything from the Bon Scott era. I wanted to hear something off Back in Black (I actually requested Back in Black or the other one). They took it as an opportunity to give a speech about how the current AC/DC lineup was still around and still rocked and that they existed to honor the previous lineup. If you ever get a chance, check em out. They're uncanny. Close your eyes and you'd swear it's the real deal.

Yes I have this CD. I hadnt listened to it for quite some time. Since you mentioned it, I decided to give it a listen. I must say that I CAN dig it but I can see where it is hard to swallow. Coltrane was pushing his explorations to the extreme, traditional melody and rhythm do not apply on this recording. It is more about color and texture gained by the overall sound rather than individual notes. I think to "get it you must abandon all preconceived ideas of what music should sound like. This reminds me of the work of Albert Ayler whom I have mentioned before and I really really dig. It has been said that Ayler and Coltrane were very fond of each others work and very highly influenced by one another. I have also heard a story stating that Albert Ayler was known to "practice" by play Coltrane solos backwards!

Cool story. I guess the hardest thing for me about that album is trying to get used to Coltrane playing the melody part as well as filling in the bass parts. We are so used (with our ears) to hear 2 separate instruments playing a melody part and the bass part. To hear the same instrument play both parts in the same piece is a little bewildering to the neophyte, to say the least!

I like to call this type of music "advanced listening"javascript:smilie(';)')
Do you have any other albums by Coltrane or anyone else that are like this or is this the only one?

Well, my Impulse! Coltrane albums are lacking to say the least but I do have Sun Ship and of course, A Love Supreme plus Live at Birdland, Ballads, Crescent, Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, and John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman.

I still have to get albums like Stellar Regions, Meditations, Ascension, and Expression to name a few but I have been on a Miles and Horace Silver kick of late (currently listening to "Doodlin").

Maybe one of these days I will have every CD I have ever wanted...maybe:(

    :)
