No luck, I'm afraid. This computer has evolved into an inteligent being with the sole purpose of filling me with violent urges.

Yeah it only does it while playing the game. I've download all available patches for the game too.

    Danzel: this...

doesn't apply to me, I don't think, because I haven't moved a Sim in my city.

I have heard of games crashing before but dang are they suppose to turn off your WHOLE system???

Go here to download the driver for it : http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=80533

or go here and look for the proper one that you think

user name and password is: drivers
    all

Hopefully you know it's the right video card. I don't know by installing the wrong driver will give it that name. to make sure how about taking the card out and look look to see if there is any name on the card. I don't remember if windows 98 automatically detect the card and give you the name. I know Xp does.

If that's the case, then it does sound like a hardware issue. When the blue HP screen is on the display, Windows hasn't even loaded yet; at this point the computer is running the basic MS-DOS software which doesn't use driver files. This means that the driver software isn't the culprit.

If you can get your hands on another monitor, try swapping it with the monitor on your computer. If the display now looks normal, the issue is with the original monitor. If that's the case, you could try degaussing the monitor as someone suggested (although if you have a newer HP monitor, that option won't be available; HP now manufactures monitors that don't require degaussing). If you're still getting the lines on the display even before Windows loads with the other monitor, that means that the video card is the likely issue. In any event, as I mentioned previously, I doubt updated drivers would help, and you're probably looking at having to replace the monitor or video card. Yes, I know that's not what you wanted to read, but that appears to be the case now.
